Title: Elizabeth Burke - Stand By Your Man
Pairing/Characters: Peter/Elizabeth, Neal, OCs
Rating: PG13
Spoilers: Season 1
Summary: 50 Prompts – 1 sentence each based on the character Elizabeth Burke
Notes/Warnings: Read the disclaimer on my LJ

#01 - Speak
Peter just gapes, unable to get a single word out, and she beams, victorious at last at rendering her spouse speechless with a mere dress.

#02 - Touch
He slips into bed as she's just about to drop off, sliding a protective arm around her waist - his touch as soothing as the knowledge that he's home and free from harm.

#03 - Memory
She still wakes with nightmares from time to time, but then every New Yorker has memories of 9/11 they can't shake.

#04 - Vanilla
Peter confessed he was vanilla before they even got engaged, but she decided he was trainable.

#05 - Chocolate
It gets everywhere not just on the sheets and they laugh so hard they decide they definitely need to try chocolate sauce in bed again if only for the tension relief the hilarity of it all gave them.

#06 - Ways and Means
She runs the business, she runs the household and if Peter inquires about how they're doing she tells him fine because no matter what she can make it fine.

#07 - Belief
Belief in God is one thing, but belief in Peter and his abilities keeps her from going insane with worry, plus now that he has Neal helping him she has two smart men to believe in, knowing they both want to make sure Peter comes home safe to her.

#08 - Linger
"Just five more minutes..." she begs, but she had the misfortune to marry a man who really believed what the FBI stood for so once again he won't be late for work.

#09 - Illuminance
She comes home to the soft glow of candles throughout the house and a husband who just shushes away her questions and gives her a night to remember.

#10 - Ornament
Neal's dates seem little more than arm ornaments, but when Peter takes her somewhere she feels like he can't wait to proudly show her off to everyone.

#11 - Coup de foudre
She's envious of friends who had big romantic love at first sight events with their intendeds, but in the end she prefers the slow build of Peter's traditional wooing, right down to the bended knee proposal.

#12 - Archway
They stand under the grand arch of the cathedral exchanging rings and while her 'I do' is little more than a breath Peter makes sure the last row knows how much he wants to marry her.

#13 - Fate
Fate takes too long so she holds up a sign knowing he's watching and hoping he likes Italian too.

#14 - Pulse
She lays her head on her husband's chest and presses fingers to his wrist as if she needs more than one proof of a pulse after a bullet almost stole him away from her.

#15 - Envelope
She expected more than an envelope from her parents as a wedding gift, but when she sees the amount on the check inside she realizes the gift they're offering can't be wrapped: it's the down payment for a house.

#16 - Cold
Her feet are always cold in bed until Peter comes to warm them up.

#17 - Need
She's an independent businesswoman, in charge of her own household and fully capable of making her own decisions, but that doesn't mean she doesn't need Peter.

#18 - Drunk
She's only tipsy, thank you very much, but Peter very gentlemanly steers her out of the party and takes her home, sleeping on the couch so he could bring her aspirin as soon as she woke with the screaming hangover she swore she wasn't going to get.

#19 - Mask
The first time she visits him at the Bureau she almost doesn't recognize her own husband; his face is a mask so stern and mean looking she's taken aback until they tell her it's not an employee he's berating in there - it's a suspect.

#20 - Rose
There's a single rose on the empty pillow beside hers when she wakes; it's his apology for working all night, she knows, but she wishes she has less apologies and more husband.

#21 - Two
It doesn't really hit her until the wedding reception; they're married, together, forever, two made one.

#22 - Fresh
Strawberry juice dribbles down Peter's chin as she feeds him a fresh berry, lapping it up with her tongue before it threatens his now unbuttoned dress shirt.

#23 - Bribe
"Come on... Just a little bite," she teases, settling herself in Peter's lap and putting the spoonful of chocolate pots de crème in his mouth; food was always her best method of seduction.

#24 - Error
"No, no, I said sixty tins of caviar not sixty cases!"

#25 - Appetite
After sampling yet another catering menu she thinks she might not want to eat again - ever.

#26 - Refrain
She opens her mouth, but wisely closes it again - sometimes Peter just needs to pace and rant about Neal, not hear suggestions about what to do with him.

#27 - Family
She's Manhattan all the way and Peter's from blue collar roots, but if she has to pound it into their heads she's going to make sure her parents acknowledge that Peter's the smartest man she's ever met and well worthy of her hand in marriage.

#28 - Grieve
He's working overtime every night it seems, but he drops everything to go with her when her beloved grandmother dies and doesn't leave her side, even the day after the funeral.

#29 - Vapor
Every time she borrows Peter's car it has absolutely no gas in it, yet he somehow manages to drive it all the time.

#30 - Tea
Satchmo knows she's upset when she settles in a ball on the couch in her bathrobe after midnight with a hot cup of tea and curls up against her side - the two of them waiting for their missing family member to come home safely.

#31 - Medicine
Peter's the worst patient ever, but he takes his medicine whenever she brings it and eventually remembers to thank her for taking such good care of him when he's sick.

#32 - Moth
She feels like an idiot chasing the moth around the living room - even more so when Neal catches it on the first try with seemingly no effort at all.

#33 - Perfect
Neal's perfect, like a glossy magazine model only living and breathing, witty and charming, but she already married the perfect man and she's happy without any gloss.

#34 - Rope
She tries to imagine Neal's anklet, an invisible rope that tethers him to a tiny radius of the grandest city in the country - so cruel.

#35 - Wind
Her hair's blown six ways to Sunday and damp from the drizzly rain, but when she shows up for their lunch date Peter still tells her how beautiful she looks.

#36 - Crossroads
It's a big promotion, running his own team in White Collar crime and even though she knows she'll see less of him, she gives him her blessing knowing how important it is to him to advance in his career and take down bigger criminals.

#37 - Summer
They get her parents' house in the Hamptons to themselves one summer since they're away in Tuscany, so she lures Peter into the pool naked and they make love in the water, feeling decadent under the stars.

#38 - Candy
She begs and he buys her fresh salt water taffy from one of the tourist shops with only cursory complaints about how overpriced it is, but she feels like a little girl again for a moment eating candy by the sea in a pretty pink dress.

#39 - Photograph
It's not their wedding picture she lingers over, but a candid shot in which she swears she can see how much Peter loves her just by looking in his eyes.

#40 - Spoon
One spoonful and she's hooked: "Oh yes, this is the caviar I want and I don't care how much it costs...wait, how much?"

#41 - Forest
They get lost driving amongst the trees, totally missing the turn off for the cabin they rented, but it's just nice to be out of the city for a weekend.

#42 - Mirror
She faces the mirror on her thirtieth birthday with bravery, but still makes an appointment with a dermatologist to see what sort of miracle wrinkle avoidance creams he can sell her.

#43 - Smoke
Peter brings home a cigar once - once.

#44 - Shine
The guests will start arriving in half an hour and she does one final walk-through of the event space she's set up - it sparkles and shines and she's sure she more than earned her fee on this one.

#45 - Balloon
There were so many balloons they filled the office and her clients thought it was adorable even as she tried to work around them, but at least after that apology Peter never forgot their anniversary again.

#46 - Vine
She's always in tune with the grapevine, but she's not sure who's the better gossip: Lauren, June or Mozzie.

#47 - Butterfly
It's not a big backyard, but any yard at all in New York City is precious so when a butterfly alights on her newly planted rose bush she smiles, knowing it was worth how much they spent on the house.

#48 - Gloves
She gave up the white glove test as soon as Peter brought the dog home, both of them looking up at her with big eyes saying 'Please?'

#49 - Venom
If Peter hadn't punched Fowler she surely would have.

#50 - Remain
He's a workaholic, forgetful, nowhere near as classy as her parents and friends, yet her husband is fiercely loyal, remarkably ethical and loves her so completely it sometimes takes her breath away - so she's staying with Peter, no matter what.

Hola WC fen! This is just a little something I tossed off in the last hour or so for fun and figured I'd share with you all. No beta so forgive any errant verb tense issues. I just wanted to enjoy a little writing this evening and didn't want to have to think too hard about it.

I totally plan on doing Neal and Peter - I've even got the theme sets picked out. Oddly enough Elizabeth wanted to go first. Go figure.

I'm still working on my five part White Collar Series called Vanishing Act, so I hope this offering will keep my place warm in the fandom until I start publishing longer pieces. ;-)

I confess the original title was "Stands with a Fist" but this one works better even if it was a snap decision.

Wow, this is really impressive! I like the mix: some funny ones, some sad ones, some deep ones...I can't wait to see what you do with Neal and with Peter :)
Emma DeMaraisemmademarais on June 17th, 2010 04:44 am (UTC)
Thank you so much!

I hope to have them both out by next week at the latest. I was surprised Elizabeth wanted to go first, but hers just came out really easily. /marvels/

This is great. Very true to what we know of El all the way.
Emma DeMaraisemmademarais on June 17th, 2010 04:45 am (UTC)
Thank you! I wasn't sure I had a decent handle on her, but once I started writing it just flowed out.

*claps with glee*

Much as I love my OT3 I have a soft spot for good old-fashioned Peter/Elizabeth. And you, my dear, have done a spectacular job. Elizabeth just leaps off the page (screen?) here, and her love for Peter is just so strong and true and just, oh.

After the spectacular fail I saw in fandom today, this was a much-needed breath of fresh air.

Brava, hon, and thank you. *hugs*
Emma DeMaraisemmademarais on June 17th, 2010 04:47 am (UTC)
Fail? Oh no! I'm sorry, hon! /hugs/

I don't think there's a pairing I wouldn't like with those three: P/E, P/N, N/E, P/N/E. It's all good.

I was worried that she'd come off as too supportive, but she really doesn't put her life on hold for Peter. She runs her business, she runs the household *and* she's there for him. Quite a woman...

Thanks for your lovely comment, as always, my dear.

I loved these. I was just thinking recently it would be nice to see some Elizabeth centered fic.
Emma DeMaraisemmademarais on June 17th, 2010 04:48 am (UTC)
Thank you! I never liked TAT before save one episode she did of Cupid, but she's really grown on me as Elizabeth.
hoosierbitchhoosierbitch on June 16th, 2010 04:22 pm (UTC)
Okay, this is fabulous.

I don't usually love 50sentence fics - this one, though, was just spot-on. I love how strong El is - especially in "Vanilla" and "Ways and Means," where she's so honest about her place and role and expectations in her relationship with Peter. You perfectly showcase all the ways Elizabeth is a smart business owner, voracious lover, and loving partner.

*happy sigh*
Emma DeMaraisemmademarais on June 17th, 2010 04:50 am (UTC)
Yay! Thank you so much! That you liked this means a lot because someone whose opinion I trust made you their author rec for White Collar fic. I really wanted to show all those facets of her - in the past as well as the present. She's a great catch and Peter (and Neal) knows it.

I hope you wind up liking my Neal and Peter ones once they come out. (And now I'm considering doing Mozzie as well!)
hoosierbitchhoosierbitch on June 19th, 2010 04:06 am (UTC)
Oh, wow! *is flattered* Thank you for letting me know! :D

I'm really looking forward to reading your Neal and Peter (AND MOZ?!?!?!) fics, too!

rubynyerubynye on June 16th, 2010 06:36 pm (UTC)
Oh, this is ADORABLE! I just wish I had more time to appreciate it at length!
Emma DeMaraisemmademarais on June 17th, 2010 04:51 am (UTC)
It's not going anywhere. ;-)

I'm just tickled that you like it so much, hon.

Loved how so many of these seemed to tell a story (sometimes serious, sometimes sexy, sometimes romantic, sometimes funny) all by themselves, even though all sentences together also told the one big story of one awesome character and her relationship with 'her man'.
Emma DeMaraisemmademarais on June 17th, 2010 04:52 am (UTC)
Thank you! I love drabbles and microfiction so it's a great challenge to me to try to say as much as I can in one sentence when I write these things. There is so much to Elizabeth: woman, wife, business owner, daughter, friend... I liked being able to explore all those areas freely and let the parts equal the whole of who she really is.
whitecollarfan on July 9th, 2010 09:18 pm (UTC)
Just realized I hadn't commented on this before. I think all of these are great! :)
Emma DeMaraisemmademarais on July 10th, 2010 07:58 am (UTC)
Thank you! Neal's are done, but they didn't turn out as well as Elle's so I'm redoing them before I try doing Peter. Hope to get the rest of them out soon though. These were fun!
