"More wine?"

Sinking into the plush sofa beneath him, Neal let out a sigh of contentment, eyes taking in the vision of Kate standing in front of him. He always did love that purple dress on her; he remembered when they found it in a Paris boutique, the way they conned the salesgirl into giving it to them as a sample for their supposed business, how he peeled her out of it the first night she wore it...

Neal blinked himself back to attention as Kate shook their wine bottle to ask again.

"Yes," he told her, nudging his empty goblet forward. "I'd love more wine."

She started to pour, but the bottle was empty.

"There's nothing left..." Frowning, she put the bottle in the trash.

"Kate!" Neal gaped, stunned. "I'll get more wine, I promise!" He rescued the bottle, staring at her in disbelief.

"That's all you ever were..." she huffed. "Promises..."

"No..." Neal protested in confusion. "I love you..." He reached for her, but she pulled away, her demeanor turning cold.

"You never understood. So brilliant, yet completely missing what was happening with us."

"What, that you gave up on me in prison, that you didn't love me anymore?" It hurt to put words to Peter's accusations, but Neal found he couldn't help what came out of his mouth.

"No..." Before his eyes Kate vanished, only her voice remaining - a ghost to haunt his days and nights. "I stopped loving you long before prison." The voice surrounded him, enveloped him in a cloud of French perfume. "How do you think Peter finally caught you?"

A siren roared past in the city street below and Neal woke, heart racing, alone in his bed at June's.

Then he woke again - for real - in his prison cell.

Title taken from the lyrics to Poison Arrow by ABC.

Apropos, no? ;-)

Very special thanks to beta melissima for her assistance with this fic.

:( Poor Neal. He needs snuggles after this and not prison snuggles.

Thank you for the great drabble.

YW, hon. That last line was added in rewrites because the fic just wasn't cruel enough, you know? /feels horribly evil/

Maybe you could write a bit where Neal is back out of prison and gets those snuggles he needs.

Thank you! There's enough mystery in the backstory that I figured there was a chance it might be true (the informing part).
