Lie to Me Fic: Watch and Wait and Wonder
Posted to lietome_fic

Title: Watch and Wait and Wonder
Pairing/Characters: Ria, Gillian
Rating: PG13
Spoilers: Delinquent
Summary: Ria's always watched
Notes/Warnings: Read the disclaimer on my LJ

Cal may have been right about Ria's father: that she learned how to see a lie on a person's face from him.

But people's expressions? It's not all she sees. Ria was born looking around her and she's observant far beyond what she needs to read in a person's features at work.

She's always watched.

She watched and learned her father's body language so she knew when the first blow was coming.

She watched her girlfriends with the neighborhood boys so she knew who was going to be trouble.

She watched the gangbangers hanging on the corners on her way home from school so she knew when to run.

And she watched the rich white girls at the shopping mall. For a while, in her teenage years, they became somewhat of an obsession. They were like aliens to her: spending up a storm with daddy's credit card, dropped off in their mother's brand new Mercedes, name dropping celebrities as if they knew them personally...

Their lives seemed to be one big fantasy, one where boys jumped at their merest whims for a chance at their fickle affection, where they never had to count the money in their purses before they decided to buy an eleventh sweater or a four dollar latte in the food court, where the world treated them as modern day princesses and gave them whatever they desired.

For a while Ria coveted that life. For a while she wondered if any of those girls would still be included in the pack if they were equally as rich but with brown skin. For a while she hated them for being all that she wasn't.

Once she went into the same cosmetics shop as those girls and bought some of the same makeup, even if it was in the only darker shade they had and it didn't match well. It was good quality though - enough to cover the shiner her father had given her.

She figured none of those girls needed makeup for that.

Then she grew up.

Once she hit eighteen her sole focus was getting out: getting a job, getting her own place, getting away from her father.

She did her best to forget about him, about the boys with their filthy mouths bragging lies about who they screwed, about the gang members who shouted even nastier things as she passed on the other side of the street.

She forgot about the pretty perfect white girls and went about making an imperfect life of her own in the real world.

A couple of months after she started working at The Lightman Group she saw a picture in the paper of a murder victim. A local woman, about her age, had been raped and killed. She was pretty, blonde and polished - smiling in the newsprint.

She looked just like one of the mall princesses.

Ria had survived her father's drunken rages, local boy date rapists and gangbangers who didn't blink over pulling a knife much less a gun.

And she'd done it by keeping her eyes open.

Given the choice between harsh reality and an even harsher death, Ria still wouldn't choose that blissfully ignorant fairy tale existence.

So when Gillian asks Ria why she looks so uncomfortable while she pulls out her platinum card to pay for her purchases at Saks Fifth Avenue, Ria just shakes her head. Gillian would never understand.

As dirty as Gillian likes to think she gets her hands, inside she's still royalty.

And now matter how much Cal pays her now, Ria doesn't live in her world.

New fandom! (Number 22!)

This was written for arobynsung's prompt at medie's Awesome People of Colour are Awesome Comment-a-thon comment ficathon. The prompt was: "Lie To Me, Ria Torres, I have always watched". (Visual reference here.)

I've been wanting to fic Lie to Me for a while now (Ria's smoking hot! Eli is adorable! Angus MacFadyen and Max Martini guesting!) so it's odd that a comment fic should draw me out in the end. (Thank you to my dear friend rubynye for emailing me a link to let me know about it!)

This piece might be a huge mess or it might be an insightful look into Ria's head. Me, I've only had one cup of coffee today and I'm still waking up at like 6:30PM so I couldn't say. LOL

Regardless, it's my first Lie to Me fic so yay for a new and delightful fandom!

Now I'm wondering what's next? Shall I succumb to the lingering allure of Warehouse 13? Or will Auggie from Covert Affairs snare me in a crossover pairing? Does the fall TV slate hold some heretofore undiscovered gem that shall make me want to fic it at once?

Because I can't just stop at 22 fandoms, right? ;-)

"Once she went into the same cosmetics shop as those girls and bought some of the same makeup, even if it was in the only darker shade they had and it didn't match well. It was good quality though - enough to cover the shiner her father had given her."

What a gut punch!

Wow. This is really wonderful - the insights here make me want to go rewatch the LTM that's on the DVR, but for Ria and Gillian instead of Burns. This piece is rich with insight and bristling with hurt - like a truffle with a needle in it.

Even though it's bitter, I have to go read it again. Brava, Emma, brava.

I'm glad you liked it. Weird, isn't it, to not get to read things before I post them on LJ, eh? ;-)

At least it's not a jumbled mess. I really went kind of stream of consciousness and didn't want to let too much overanalysis get in the way.

You know me: queen of overthinking. /rolls eyes/

/♥s you and your comment/
melissima: WCSWmelissima on August 9th, 2010 02:15 am (UTC)

Yes, I'm spoiled. I get all the good stuff before the "public" hehehe.

No, see, the jumbled mess is *my* M.O. - throwing everything but the kitchen sink at a fic, until I don't even know what story I'm telling anymore. :) This? This is artful interior monologue.
Emma DeMaraisemmademarais on August 9th, 2010 02:25 am (UTC)
You usually do. I just didn't really bother this time. You were busy, I wasn't going to beta it, yada yada yada...

I don't know about artful, but in the write what you know column I got more than a tiny fraction of myself in this one. /shrugs/

Yay another fandom in common <3

I really like your take on Ria and I could see this happening on the show!! It's a great look into her character and very insightful.
Emma DeMaraisemmademarais on August 9th, 2010 02:58 am (UTC)
Yes! I'm all for another fandom in common with you!

And thank you. I'm glad to hear it turned out IC.

It's funny, I was sure I'd fic Eli first, but Ria's kind of stolen his focus away.

Though now that I write LTM I'm going to have to write Gillian/Dave sex for my roomie (who is a huge Max Martini fan) next. Hehehe
Robynarobynsung on August 9th, 2010 04:59 am (UTC)
This says everything about Ria that I love. Her watchfulness, her history, her insight. Thank you so much for filling this!
Emma DeMaraisemmademarais on August 9th, 2010 06:20 am (UTC)
YW! Yours was the only prompt that made me perk up and trust me - it got me to write a fandom I'd never written before so that was quite the excellent choice for a prompt!
Aleia Jadealeia_jade on August 9th, 2010 03:11 pm (UTC)
This was a really great, insightful piece, and it gave me an angle to consider that I never had before (though I probably should have). I can definitely see this in the show. Thanks for giving me another way to watch.
Emma DeMaraisemmademarais on August 9th, 2010 07:58 pm (UTC)
Wow, thank you for such a thoughtful comment! I was so pleased in Delinquent to finally get to see some in depth Ria backstory and this was the result.
topaz_eyes on August 9th, 2010 04:06 pm (UTC)
I love this insight into Ria's life. She's always been perceptive and holds her own. Seeing Gillian through Ria's eyes feels spot on, too.
Emma DeMaraisemmademarais on August 9th, 2010 08:01 pm (UTC)
Thank you! Adding Gillian at the end came later when I was rewriting it a bit, but it felt right. She is pretty much exactly the kind of privileged white woman, raised in money, that Ria would have watched from afar growing up. For Ria to classify her as 'royalty' versus someone like her definitely rang true and pointed out that she still feels isolated in her new job.

Wow, Emma. That's excellant. Poor Ria. I love her because her background isn't flaunted at us - it made her who she is, yeah, but she's not waving the abused-minority flag at us every other episode.

It's really good.

New fandoms? I've suddenly and totally randomly become obsessed with Medium, a show I've watched casually for years but now can't go more than two days without watching/writing about...
Emma DeMaraisemmademarais on August 9th, 2010 08:07 pm (UTC)
Hey, hon! Nice to see you on my LJ again!

So far I've liked how they handled Ria and I've liked how they didn't spend a lot of time going on about her being an actual minority - they just let her be good at what she does. Eli? Adorable. I can't wait to fic him too.

You know, I really enjoyed Medium when it first aired (Can I have a Joe of my own please?) but after a season or two I got too far behind in canon and gave up on catching up, figuring I'd catch up on DVD someday. I liked it very much - it and House - but for some crazy reason there's just too much good TV that I like on in the better part of the last decade. I used to budget myself to two series at a time (like X Files and Buffy) of serious watching and it was easy because there wasn't much I liked on other than them. But now? ZOMG I watch way more than the 22 fandoms I fic so it's nuts trying to keep up.

So yeah, Medium is on my DVD someday list, but if you want to read a cool Numb3rs/Medium crossover? Head over to rinkle's LJ. She's got a case oriented drabble series that's very cool and mostly Medium.
Acting my shoe size: stalkerswild_force71 on August 9th, 2010 09:57 pm (UTC)
I'm usually around. Ijust don't often comment if I'm not in whatever fandom you're writing in.

Ohmigod Joe! I love him so. And Allison doesn't deserve him, we'd be much better for him. Seriously, it seems like most of their conversations go like :"You can't possibly understand, Joe!" "Alright, but..." "You don't understand!" "I know, we..." "You're not even trying to understand! Just mind our kids while I do the heavy lifting." " ... "
Although I'm biased, because hubba hubba. And I do love Ariel.

Ok, I don't watch Numb3rs - he solves crimes with math, right? - will I be able to follow anyway? ::Wanders in that direction::
Emma DeMaraisemmademarais on August 9th, 2010 10:39 pm (UTC)
Yeah, Joe's like the perfect husband and - pun intended - Alison can be kind of a nightmare of a wife to have. And LOL that does sound like their conversations! You'd think after a few seasons they'd move past that. /shakes head/

I kind of want Ariel to meet Alexis, the daughter from Castle. Those two would be fun in conversation.

All you need to know about Numb3rs is Don and Charlie are brothers who solve crimes together: Don's the FBI agent and Charlie is the younger brother genius math professor. The series is more Medium POV so you should be fine.
Acting my shoe size: merlinwild_force71 on August 9th, 2010 10:41 pm (UTC)
Alexis is ok. Emily Lightman is better. IMO, anyway.

OK. It's late here, but I'll check the fics out soon. Thanks for the rec!

Psst write some Medium...
Emma DeMaraisemmademarais on August 9th, 2010 10:57 pm (UTC)
Yes! Oh definitely Emily!

I'll see what I can do about the Medium fic...
rubynye: Elphaba (gargoylekitty)rubynye on August 11th, 2010 01:19 am (UTC)
Oh, this is insightful, and I don't even know Ria! But now I feel like I grew up with her.
Emma DeMaraisemmademarais on August 11th, 2010 01:30 am (UTC)
Well then you feel a little bit like you grew up with me then. ♥

Lie to Me isn't a knock it out of the park show like White Collar, but it's really grown on me (and it hasn't hurt that they've added Max Martini aka Billy Cooper in a recurring role!) so I felt compelled to fic it.
sana4evasana4eva on August 11th, 2010 02:19 am (UTC)
Guh! Just beautiful -- speechless with love for Ria Torres a deep insight into not just why she's great at her job, but why she's got Cal's begrudging respect. It's 'cause she didn't fall to what she saw, regardless, but rose above it. Helping others to do the same.

**Adores this** Bravo!
