White Collar Fic: To Honor His Memory
Written for whitecollar100 Challenge #009 – Witness

Title: To Honor His Memory
Pairing/Characters: Diana
Rating: PG13
Word Count: 300
Spoilers: Need to Know
Summary: Diana had a good reason to want to join the FBI
Notes/Warnings: Read the disclaimer on my LJ

Charlie's funeral was lavish; the Barrigans spared no expense when it came to the final resting place of the man who had saved their daughter's life.

Diana sat in her best black suit beside her stoic mother and equally taciturn father across from Charlie's next of kin.

She wanted to jump up and pound on the coffin, yell at Charlie to come back and take care of her, to berate him for dying on her. She'd been a selfish brat, always flaunting his protection, always the troublemaker. But Charlie had stood by her, tried to teach her actions had consequences, that there was more to her world than trashing five star hotel rooms trying to get her parents to pay attention to her.

Now Charlie's sister and his nephews were in tears before her and she knew it was her fault they'd never see Charlie again.

She wanted to stand up and scream at the top of her lungs. She wanted to close her eyes and make it all go away, but whenever she closed her eyes she saw it all happen again: Charlie pushing her down, the gun through the car window, the blood on his white dress shirt...

Charlie deserved better than her behaving like a prat at his funeral.

So she sat, for once the perfect diplomat's daughter, and only broke when it came time to tell Charlie's sister how sorry she was.

Because she was sorry.

The one blank left to fill in should have been easy.

"What made you want to join the FBI?"

Diana closed her eyes and witnessed Charlie's death all over again.

Then she picked up her pen, took a shaky breath and started to write.

"When I was young, my bodyguard died in the line of duty. He died protecting me..."

I've been wanting to do Diana and Charlie fic ever since Need to Know aired, but I confess I didn't think it would wind up like this.

I've been wanting to do Neal/Diana/The Hat or Neal/Diana/Christie as well, but apparently in the angst vs porn war angst is currently winning.

Re: Confession
PLEASE! In fact I think everyone should give Neal/The Hat/Anyone fic a shot! I can't imagine there will be any bad that could come of it.

And yeah, that kind of broke my heart too. This was a rare fic I could visualize in my head and young Diana really was broken up over her role in Charlie's death.

Thanks for reading and commenting!

Re: Confession
ROFL! I've never used a male porn fairy! This should be interesting. (I'm slashing Neal with Captain Jack Harkness of Torchwood so I'm a little cowed.)

Oh, this absolutely broke my heart, too. In the best of ways.

Ouch. Poor Diana. As always, this was sad and beautiful and more than a little perfect.

*needs to add WC icons

Yay for you knowing White Collar now!

(Next time I see you in slashchat remind me and I'll write you Colby/anyone from WC you want.)

BTW, I made Mel a Neal icon that's stealable if you want it. It's black and white and smoking hot (but then that's Neal for you). ;-)

YAY for being caught up on White Collar! (except for last night's episode.) I didn't really enjoy most of Season 1 until the show started being less about the cases and more about Peter and Neal and Mozzie and the rest of the team. Season 2 has been great. I actually started a Mozzie/Gina drabble. hehe. I just need to finish it.

I'm sorry I missed slashchat Sunday. We went to lunch to celebrate Tina getting a job and had margaritas. I like to call them "nap juice." LOL. I slept through all of slashchat.

I am also working on some Neal icons and you are right about mel's icon. Mmmmmmmmmm. He really is dreamy. Tina has requested one of him in his hat. LOL.

This is lovely and sad and makes me ache for the young Diana.

Another perfect fill. Thank you!

YW! I'm really grateful LG has help running the WC100 comm, so thank you as well! I've run N100 with a co-mod so I can tell you it really does help to have more than one person.

I was waiting and hoping for someone to grab this bunny. I'm glad it was you. You really hit all the emotional beats just right.

/bows/ Thank you for such faith in me. I could not resist it, despite how much I wanted the porn.

I never gave thought to if Diana ever put Charlie's death down on some official FBI documentation, but she would, wouldn't she? Very revealing about the character. Love how you made Charlie an even bigger turning point in her life than she let on- it clearly had impact from the way she spoke, I think you've done a good job defining the full weight of it here.

Thank you. I think many people in jobs that are lower paying and less prestigious than they could get elsewhere (pointed out so perfectly with Peter playing CPA in this last episode) have a moment that defines them and is pointed to as part of the reason they chose their profession. I would imagine many people working in law enforcement, social work and education have such stories to tell.

I almost stopped reading because it was so painful. And that's a compliment to your writing.
