White Collar Fic: This is Not My Beautiful House
Written for whitecollar100 Challenge #011 – Family

Title: This is Not My Beautiful House
Pairing/Characters: Peter/Elizabeth/Neal
Rating: PG13
Word Count: 300
Spoilers: Pilot
Summary: A Sunday morning tableau gives Peter pause to reflect on his good fortune
Notes/Warnings: Read the disclaimer on my LJ

Peter's enjoying a day off reading the Sunday Times in bed when he looks up and suddenly sees his world anew.

Elizabeth's tossed on Peter's dress shirt from the night before and if it's buttoned in more than one place he'll be surprised; she only put it on to walk downstairs to make coffee.

Neal's in his pajama pants pillowing his head on Elizabeth's thigh as he does the crossword puzzle in ink.

He's scratching Satchmo behind the ears as Elizabeth threads her fingers through Neal's dark locks.

It hardly seems real to Peter: two brilliant and beautiful people sharing his bed, his home, his life. Oh, and the perfect dog too.

It's not the traditional family his father envisioned for him, but it's his family all the same and he loves them.

A kiss on his bare upper arm gets his attention as Elizabeth hands him a portion of the newspaper.

"They covered that big gallery opening I catered last night. The critic tore the art to pieces, but he loved my hors d'oeuvre."

"Of course they did." Neal gets the words out Peter was planning to say before he can open his mouth. "They came from the woman with the most educated palate in Manhattan!"

"They came from the smartest event planner in Manhattan," Peter adds, putting his own spin on it. "And I believe someone here deserves a little R and R after that big job."

He starts to draw her to him and Satchmo makes a noise of complaint, jumping off the bed.

"He's learned when the bed's about to be an unfriendly place for a nap," Neal says with a wry chuckle.

"Not an unfriendly place," Peter counters, pulling Elizabeth flush as Neal slots himself into place right behind her. "Just temporarily closed to canines."

Title taken from the lyrics to the Talking Heads song Once in a Lifetime.

You may find yourself in a beautiful house, with a beautiful wife
You may ask yourself: well... how did I get here?

You may tell yourself
This is not my beautiful house!
You may tell yourself
This is not my beautiful wife!

It seemed to fit Peter's sort of awe at how he came to this twice (or does the dog count as triple?) blessed life - in that odd Talking Heads sort of way. ;-)

Very special thanks to beta melissima for her assistance with this fic.

Thank you. I usually can't see my fic, but the four of them sprawled across the bed with the Sunday times just really hit me as a great visual.

oh someone on my flist commented how generally happy in life Peter is when all is right with Neal and Elizabeth and this fic is such a reflection on that--lovely domestic contentment.

Hey there! /waves/

Yeah, Peter's really a very simple sort of guy. He likes a beer and a big TV with sports on it, his dog by his side and a kiss on the cheek from his wife at the same time he's absolutely assured Neal is refraining from being up to no good. /grins/
