White Collar Fic: The Best Laid Plans
Written for whitecollar100 Challenge #012 – Team

Title: The Best Laid Plans
Pairing/Characters: Peter/Elizabeth, Neal
Rating: PG13
Word Count: 300
Spoilers: Pilot
Summary: Peter tries to plan a romantic evening with Elizabeth
Notes/Warnings: Read the disclaimer on my LJ

Peter had planned to pick up the flowers, planned to scrub down the backyard patio furniture, planned to get fresh wood for the fire pit. He needed to pick up the food, pick out a bottle of wine and pick what he was going to wear.

Then the Worthington case went to hell while he was still halfway through his testimony.

Everyone on his team at the Bureau threw themselves into shoring up the prosecution's case before it was too late.

Then Friday night came and Peter hadn't done anything to prepare the special romantic evening he'd promised Elizabeth.

Coming out of the courthouse he got a text message from Neal. "Come straight home" was all it said and Peter all but ran to his car, afraid of what he'd find when he got there.

When he arrived at the house Neal pretty much shoved him into the shower, ignoring his questions. When he got out he found clothes laid out for him. After he dressed he found Neal out in the backyard putting the finishing touches on the floral arrangements as chafing dishes kept a catered dinner warm.

Neal just handed Peter the to do list he'd stolen off his desk; everything on it was checked off including cleaning the furniture.

Peter just gaped, speechless.

"You owe me one," Neal said with a smirk, opening the wine bottle with a flourish.

The back door opened and Elizabeth stood on the threshold, gazing out at the patio table, decorated with fresh flowers, softly glowing luminarias and their best china and stemware.

"Oh my goodness! This looks amazing! You did all this for me?"

Peter looked to Neal who just gestured to Peter as if to give him all the credit.

Peter smiled at his wife.

"It was a team effort."

I confess that I'm kind of disappointed in this fic. It turned out really unexceptional. But it's what I have and I'm just going to let it go and try to do something more interesting next time.

Title inspired by the Robert Burns poem that most people don't really know the actual text of.

The best laid schemes o' Mice an' Men,
Gang aft agley,
An' lea'e us nought but grief an' pain,
For promis'd joy!

(The best laid schemes of Mice and Men
oft go awry,
And leave us nothing but grief and pain,
For promised joy!)

Robert Burns, To a Mouse (Poem, November, 1785)

Very special thanks to beta melissima for her assistance with this fic.

This is sweet and fun and a great use of the prompt. Don't be down on it, I love it.

Bah, you know me. I try to push myself and this was just me doing no heavy lifting whatsoever. It's fine. I just wanted to try harder.

I adore this...

Poor, poor Peter, just when he thinks he can never catch a break with his romantic plans, his team rids to the rescue.

It's terrific, and you should be quite proud of it.

Thanks. As long as readers enjoy it, I'm good. :-)

Yay for Neal saving the day! I love especially that he laid Peter's clothes out for him.

Hey there! I didn't realize we had this fandom in common too!

And yeah, you know Neal SO wants to dress Peter. /grins/

I loved Neal being such a big help. It's lovely that he really cares about Peter & Elizabeth.

Thanks. I can see him noticing the list and realizing Peter had no chance in hell of finishing it so he lifts it and does it all himself, not planning on taking any of the credit. For a criminal, he's a good guy. :-)

Perfect showing how Neal and the team take care of Peter.

Aw! Go, Neal. He's a hardcore Peter/El shipper, I think. :-)

I agree! It's hard not to be - they're such a great couple.
