Numb3rs Fic: Four Shots
Written for numb3rs100 Challenge September 2010 Rewind – Strip, Lick, Shout, Crumple

Title: Four Shots
Pairing/Characters: Ian
Rating: PG13
Word Count: 400
Spoilers: Sniper Zero
Summary: Four shots that FBI sniper Ian Edgerton can't forget taking
Notes/Warnings: Read the disclaimer on my LJ

119. Strip

Las Vegas is all about the bright lights. It's like daytime on the strip, so much neon, so many lightbulbs. It's blinding and Ian can't afford to lose his sight.

The shot's roof to roof, skyscraper to skyscraper. The perp's got hostages all around him, but they're all women and just enough shorter than him that Ian's got a chance at a head shot.

But he's hiding behind a glaringly bright twenty foot tall sign made up of lights meant to be seen miles away in the desert.

Ian aims, fires. One lightbulb goes out. The man behind it falls.

232. Lick

Ian's not sure if the guy waving an Uzi around knows the woman he's using as a human shield is an undercover cop, but he aims to make sure she's the one who gets to go home tonight, not him.

He's got her in a chokehold, taunting the cops by firing off a blast of rounds every once in a while to keep them at bay.

They're busy negotiating while Ian's working on finding a good position.

The sick bastard licks a stripe up her neck. The saliva is covered by a spray of blood as Ian finds his mark.

249. Shout

It's chaos, people running in all directions, cops and FBI all shouting orders as the bullets fly.

Ian finds a safe place to be still and focuses on where the shots are coming from. Three shooters: one high, two on the ground.

He radios in the locations of the two; SWAT can handle them now that they've been located. The one picking off innocent civilians is his.

He climbs the nearest tree - he has to get up above it all - and nestles in the branches watching for the next blast.

Muzzle flash gives them away.

One shot restores the silence.

256. Crumple

She's hysterical, crying her eyes out, and she probably hasn't thought this through.

But she's strapped with enough explosives to blow up half of a city block so the order comes to take her out.

Ian sees her hand on the trigger, knows that if she's holding it too tightly when he shoots it will likely detonate.

She relaxes her grip. She crumples to the ground, but Ian takes no pride in this kill.

Most days Ian trusts that he's the last resort. Some days he hopes those who give the order have to live with themselves as he does.

Really nice. I always like looks into Ian's head. I tried to do something similar with Billy on the strip but just couldn't get it working.

Random comment for you LG: One of my favorite bands is Ingram Hill and they put a new CD out on Tuesday. The second song on the album is called "Lady Grey." The lyrics don't make me think of you but every time he sings "lady grey" it makes me think of you and I smile. :)

How odd! I tried to get something going with Billy too and it didn't work. I guess some characters fit some prompts better than others, despite what we might want as authors. :-)

I always like your Ian so I'm pleased that you enjoy reading my takes on him. ♥

Very vivid, very powerful! An excellent look into Ian's work.

Thank you! Ian's such an intense person, I really wanted to match the situations to him this time.

Wow. Just. Wow. I never would have thought of something like this for this particular rewind (of course my mind goes to porny things when I see Lick and Strip in the same rewind. haha.) This was awesome! A wonderful look at Ian that, surprisingly, we don't see a lot of... specific shots. I loved that he remembered these and I loved the reflection in the last about the people who give the order. Extremely well done my dear. :)

Thanks, hon! I like picking porny sounding Rewind sets and then proving they don't have to be written as porn. /big grin/ I had just reread Two Snipers in a Bar (Seeley Booth and Ian discussing their sniper pasts) so I wondered about specific shots that affected Ian more than others whether it be for degree of risk or amount of regret.

Glad you enjoyed this!

Ian fic is always refreshing! There's just not enough gen fic out there. And as mustangcandi mentioned, it's even rarer to see sniper!Ian. I loved this. Thanks for writing and sharing! : )

Thank you for reading and commenting!

Amusingly by percentage in my Memories I write more gen than anything else, but people don't tend to think of me as a gen author. I guess it's because most of them are drabbles, but then most of my fic is drabbles period! LOL

Yay for iconnage! /fans self/

Actually, I tend to think of you as a gen author. I probably read you more than just about anyone, aside from mustangcandi. And while I hate to admit it, I'm a bit of a fic snob...so kudos to you for always drawing me in! : )

I'm having trouble posting this comment -- I hope this one shows up -- but this is an absolute wow.

I really liked these. Especially Crumple. I liked him wondering if the people who give the orders think about them later. At least if it was Don who gave the order we'd know he would "have to live with [him]self."

Thank you for taking the time to comment on this! And yes, Don's the type who actually tries to give the order or take the shot so no one else has to live with it. It's quite the martyr syndrome he's got going! Ian seems to have accepted that sometimes people have to die so others can live and while he dishes out that death for a living there's still a cost - to him and to other people involved.

Hugs Ian. An excellent look inside his head.

Thank you! It can't be easy living his life and having his past.
