Haven didn't have much, but Shepherd Book made sure everyone felt welcome there, no matter how little they had. As quaint a custom as Thanksgiving Day on Earth That Was had been, Book relished it as a reminder for his flock to be grateful for all that they did have.

So when the message came down the Cortex that Mal and the crew from Serenity would be visiting just in time for the big feast - such as it was with what little Book was able to save up, barter for and encourage people into donating - he merely sighed and set himself to the task of finding more to eat.

When they arrived two days early he went out to meet them as they landed and arrived just in time to see Mal overseeing the offloading of numerous cargo bins.

"We just happened to find some rations laying about," Mal explained with a wry smile that Book knew meant a complete bald-faced but well-meaning lie. "Thought you might be able to put 'em to use, you know, before they go bad and all."

Book popped open one of the containers and could barely contain the grin that bloomed on his face. These were no mere rations; clearly these had been absconded with on their way to someone's lavish fete.

"Think you can use them, Shepherd?" Zoe piped up, unloading yet another case. "Else we got to keep them and I ain't happy about all this grub making my husband fat and slow."

"Hey!" Wash protested. "One pie! I only had one pie! That's it."

"Of course you did, dear." Zoe gave him a loving yet dismissive glance. "We all know River's an unreliable witness at best."

"They were orange," River piped up, sitting cross-legged atop one of the bins. "I don't eat things that are orange. Except oranges." Apparently that amused her and she began to giggle to herself.

"If you ain't gonna help load then at least stay out o' my way," Jayne protested, one hand waving River off the case as another stuffed something in his mouth.

"Jayne!" Mal let his shoulders sag at the sight of him stuffing his face between hauls.

"What? I was hungry!"

Book just turned his eyes heavenward and gave silent thanks.

"We'll take it - gladly," he told Mal. "All of it."

"As it should be," Mal responded, clapping him on the back. "Happy Thanksgiving, Shepherd." He waved to his crew to get them to move faster. "Come on! We've got cases to unload, people to feed and more pies to eat, that is if Wash didn't eat them all up."

"I only had one!" Wash called after him as Mal headed back into the cargo bay. "Okay, maybe two."

Zoe kissed her husband on the cheek. "Maybe three."

"Three point one four!" River cried, dissolving into a fit of maniacal giggles.

Book just watched them all, shaking his head - both marveling at his good fortune and enjoying the irony of receiving blessings from thieves.

"The Lord truly does work in mysterious ways."
