153. Blessing

The white noise of the 10 Freeway was just loud enough to spoil the quiet candlelit Thanksgiving dinner Margaret and Alan had prepared, jostling each other in their cramped kitchen as they jockeyed for workspace on the chipped Formica counters. They could have afforded a better apartment, but they'd agreed to save up for a house instead.

As they sat down to dinner at their two person table they bowed their heads and asked for god's blessing.

Their prayers were answered.

Donnie was born nine months later and they closed escrow on the Craftsman just in time for his nursery.

081. Turkey

The turkey was a little overdone, but Alan had sworn he'd handle the whole dinner himself, barring Margaret with tiny baby Charlie in her arms from the kitchen. Even little Donnie was banned from helping, mostly because he couldn't reach the table.

It wasn't the best Thanksgiving they'd ever have in terms of how the dishes turned out, but it was their first as a complete family even if all wee Charlie got to taste was some pureed peas and a little mashed potatoes.

Donnie made up for it though, eating seconds of everything on his brother's behalf.

Especially dessert.

257. Roll

In retrospect seating the boys across from each other had been a mistake, but seeing as how Donnie had deadly aim with a roll anywhere, keeping them from starting a Thanksgiving food fight was pretty much impossible.

They were probably going to be finding loose peas in the china cabinet months later from Charlie's makeshift cutlery catapults, but at least he'd been talked out of flinging mashed potatoes.

They'd only be this age for a short period of time; Alan and Margaret knew they'd grow out of such boyish play.

That thought made them both heartily relieved and wistfully sad.

083. Pie

Unsurprisingly, Don had gotten called in on a case and taken Charlie with him. Alan just microwaved plates for all three of them when they did make it, glad to have some sort of Thanksgiving meal with his sons.

Alan had meant to make pie, but he was getting so tired these days. He felt only a little guilt picking up pumpkin and lemon meringue pies at Pie N' Burger to serve at home.

Maybe this would be his last year hosting Thanksgiving.

It was time for Charlie and Don to make their own families and begin the cycle anew.

Aww. This brought both warm, wonderful memories of my own families' Thanksgivings and amazing, lovely images of the Eppes family. I especially liked the last one. Thank you so much for sharing it with us.

hehe. I think the food fight one was my favorite. That sounds just about right.

The last one made me *sniffle*

As always, well done. :)

Oh ALAN. These are all so wonderful, separately and together.
