The phone rang, his cell beeped, door knocks went unanswered.

Sounds blurred around him like a distant muted cacophony.

Charlie wished they'd stop. He wanted silence, to be alone with his thoughts, his grief.

Amita had already shooed Millie away, the bearer of bad news, and Charlie in turn had managed to eject Amita gracelessly with a gesture.

Now he sat at his desk, staring at his hands in his lap.

How many nights had he skipped sleep because he was in the throes of a mathematical discovery? How many times had he delayed rest until Don's criminals were in custody?

Jason had been just twenty-two and one of Charlie's most promising grad students. But he was from San Diego so short holidays meant a long drive.

Only this Thanksgiving weekend he never made it back to Cal Sci.

He dallied too long, not wanting to leave family and friends, and decided to drive all night so as to not miss his Monday morning classes.

But sleep will be stayed by no man's hand when it's long overdue; even Charlie knows this. He's fallen asleep at his desk more times than he can remember.

But Jason had fallen asleep at the wheel, crossed over the center line and crashed.

Charlie had once been one of the caffeine fueled college students who survived off of whatever snatches of sleep they could manage between study sessions and socializing.

Still, he'd never had to worry about long drives when he was tired. Home was only a stone's throw away no matter how exhausted he was he could stay awake the few minutes to manage his driveway.

But Jason had pushed his limits just a little too far and that decision meant he'd crossed that final line and crossed over to the other side.

I confess I've written something like this before, but consider this my holiday PSA.

If you think you're only a little impaired and should be okay to drive? Please don't.

Poor Charlie. He would not handle losing a student well.

Poor Charlie indeed. This is definitely something that would have made for an interesting plot in an episode, but maybe it was too dark. Or maybe they did this and I'm just not remembering. LOL.

Very nicely done.
