"So, our silver burglar seems to have stopped their spree - for now at least."

Neal schooled his expression automatically before looking up from sipping his Italian Roast on June's rooftop terrace. Starting the day with June's coffee and a case was usually good for Peter's spirits, but Neal wouldn't put it past him to use the invite to dig a little deeper into Neal's other life, namely Alex's exploits.

"That's good, right?" Neal offered. "Between us and NYPD we scared them off."

"Right..." Peter didn't sound convinced. "So, the next time your friend Alex comes to town, should I tell the art collectors in Manhattan to lock up their gold?" When Neal failed to take the bait, Peter continued. "Isn't that how it works? You get a taste for silver and when it fades you move up and develop a taste for gold? And then what next? Diamonds?"

Neal thought back to the airmail letter he'd gotten from Italy. The Duke's mansion was quite impressive and he was more than generous with his time and money, treating Alex like a princess. Such was the life of leisure: why steal what you can get someone to give you everything for free?

"Oh, I'm sure our silver thief has said sayonara to shipwreck silver."

Peter raised an eyebrow. "Oh, so she's in Japan now?"

"Don't you want another cup of coffee?" Neal interrupted, pouring into Peter's half empty cup without waiting.

Peter took a sip and was instantly distracted.

"Oh, that's good stuff." After a moment his eyes flicked up to meet Neal's. "But I'm still going to keep an eye on Japan just in case."

Neal hid his smirk behind the rim of his coffee cup.

Japan was far enough from Italy. Alex would owe him.

"Good luck with that."

Another quickie, but not as quick as hoped. This one took three versions to get to 300 words. Grr. Argh. I wish for that much effort it had been a better bunny. I had such high plans for this prompt, but all my ideas evaporated. /sigh/

Hehe. :-) As much as Peter and Neal are a the perfect buddy cop pair Neal still has to remember Peter is the other side of the law. I rather liked this. It was a nice wrap up of the episode.

Writing is such a funny hobby: you see your ideal version and are disappointed, but I can only see what's here and be delighted by the strategizing and banter.

Awww, I love Neal being all deflective and coy. <3

You write Neal subtly lying-without-actually-lying very well. This one made me giggle.

*giggle* the image of Peter getting distracted by the coffee never fails to amuse. Neal is the king of misdirection ;) Thanks for this little snippet! Totally brightened a gloomy day!

Love Peter fishing for details.
