Title: Forever and Ever Amen (Sequel to For Love of Country)
Series/Universe: For Love of Country
Pairing/Characters: Charlie/Colby, Larry, Don, David, Alan
Rating: PG13
Spoilers: Judgment Call, The Mole, The Janus List, Trust Metric
Summary: The wedding of Senator Colby Granger and Dr. Charles Eppes (AU)
Notes/Warnings: Read the disclaimer on my LJ

Even with both Don's FBI team and Secret Service at the airport, the paparazzi still managed to snap pictures of Charlie rushing into Colby's arms as he got off the plane from Washington D.C. Their intimate embrace wound up on the cover of Time magazine, evoking both a hail of complaints from fundamentalist right wingers and gushing sighs from young women who declared them the cutest couple of the year on the spot.

The Craftsman's backyard was too small so Alan suggested the park with the perfect pond and the beautiful trees. Larry came out of semi-retirement to officiate. And in a stunning turn of events, the presumed nominee for the presidency accepted his invitation and arrived with his wife, throwing his full support behind Colby and Charlie's marriage.

The ceremony itself was simple and non-denominational, filled with Colby's favorite country music played by a small quartet and flowers with fractal designs in them covering the simple white arch under which they took their vows.

Colby wore his dress uniform as a proud veteran and Charlie wore a stylish designer white suit and tie. Don stood up as his brother's witness and David stood by his former partner's side as his. If Alan snuffled a little, no one was surprised.

A hush fell over the assembled crowd as the two men began to speak the vows they'd written themselves. They faced each other, took each other's hands, and said the words that would bind their love for the rest of their lives.

"Colby..." Charlie took a deep breath before he went on as if steadying himself. "I lost you. I lost you when you nearly lost your life serving your country in Afghanistan. I lost you when your heart was stopped while trying to uncover a spy in the DOJ. I lost you to Washington when you went to fulfill the late Senator's term and I lost you a final time when you chose to seek reelection rather than come home to me. At that point I swore I was over you, done. But I'd swore an earlier oath, one that took precedence, one that was even stronger. On an late summer night over ten years ago you took me to the ocean and pledged your love to me before God and nature. On that night I vowed I'd love you until I died. And despite you leaving me? I never stopped loving you. For over three years I watched you on the television being a Senator, knowing you chose that position over your relationship with me. I should have given up on you, let you go. But I couldn't. Deep inside I believed one day we would be together. And that day is today. I love you, Colby. And having lost you so many times? I don't plan to ever let you go again. Whatever happens from now on, happens to us together - good times and bad." He forced a smile despite glassy eyes filled with emotion, as he put a simple gold ring on Colby's finger. "I am my beloved's, and my beloved is mine."

"Charlie," Colby began, his voice clear and strong - ringing out over the fields proudly. "I thought I knew about love, about loyalty, about trust. And then I met you and all those words meant so much more than I ever imagined. I discovered in you how selfless love could be, how one person could put aside their own happiness to ensure the other would be fulfilled. I'm standing before you today to say that your happiness means more to me than my own and I want to spend the rest of my life making you happy. You were loyal to me even after I left you, even after I broke your heart. You never gave up on me. So I stand before you today to swear I will never give up on you nor give you any reason to have to give up on me. I thought I knew what trust was until those I trusted betrayed me. Then I believed trust was a myth, that it didn't exist. And then I took a chance and put my trust in you. I've never regretted it - not for one instant. So I stand before you all today to say I pledge myself to this man. I love you, Charlie. And you can trust me in every way because I know now I would never do anything to hurt you, ever again." He took a deep breath then carefully placed a matching gold ring on Charlie's finger. "I am my beloved's, and my beloved is mine - forever and ever amen."

Larry raised up his hands behind them.

"By the power invested in me by the Universal Life Church, I now pronounce you husband and husband. You may kiss your beloved!"

Colby drew Charlie into his arms and for a moment Larry, Don, David, the crowds watching... They all fell away and it was just the two of them - as it had been before and as it always would be from now on. Colby sank into their first kiss, enveloped in absolute bliss, wanting to hold onto the memory forever.

"I love you," Charlie whispered against his lips.

"I love you," Colby echoed.

"The ceremony has ended," Larry spoke up behind them. "Go in peace."

"Come on," Charlie took Colby's arm to head down the aisle. "We've got a world to take on - together."

"Together," Colby agreed, heart soaring as they walked down the aisle under a fluttering of flower petal confetti - the enthusiastic applause of their loved ones rising up to create a perfect moment in time, captured on film.

The romantic photograph of happy grooms Colby and Charlie coming down the aisle made the front page of seven major newspapers and the cover of pretty much every tabloid gracing the supermarket aisles.

A few years later a framed version was on the mantle in the Oval Office.

This was written for swingandswirl's 1000 word fic prize at n3rs_commentfic which she won for submitting the greatest number of comment fic overall during their contest period! Congrats, Tam! (And sorry this took so long to get posted!)

She asked for another story in the For Love of Country universe. I was reticent to write in that verse because I'd so blatantly stolen the bunny from the ever talented ladygray99 (and blanked on giving her credit until after the fact /flogs self in punishment/), but I also wanted to make Tam happy. I know L enjoys wedding fic as well so I figured I might please two friends with one fic. /crosses fingers/

Thanks for supporting n3rs_commentfic Tam! And thank you for being so understanding, L!

Title and vow quote from the Randy Travis song (which I thought Colby would like) Forever and Ever Amen.

Re: Confession
Actually people comment on my Confessions quite a bit, though it's normally to respond to something I said in them, so I don't even notice anymore!

Larry FTW! /giggles at your Hippie!Larry icon/

Thank you! All credit goes to ladygray99 for the idea and swingandswirl for making me keep writing it. :-)

Thank you! I did try to leave the ending vague, but that just means people can decide for themselves how far it all went. :-)

Me? I'd be thrilled with a gay couple on the dais someday!

Squee! *bounces* I read the original 'verse and loved it (though I didn't comment) and this is like icing on the cake. *hugs tight* I definitely want to see prequels. *nodnod*

This is me squeeing and bouncing and grinning like a loon. This was so sweet and strong and romantic and I'm just making a gushing idiot out of myself but this was just so beautiful.

/shrieks in happy, happy glee/ Excuse me while I run around squeeing and clapping like a maniac.

/takes deep breath, calms down/

Oh, Emma, I love this! It's as if you somehow managed to look into my brain, saw exactly what I wanted, and then proceeded to blow every expectation of mine out of the water. /smishes you/ Thank you thank you thank you! It's perfect.

I would pay to have that issue of Time in my collection! And I loved the reactions, so spot on. (Although I would have thought it would have been the trashy tabloids that had the pic first...)

And yay for the progressive Presidential nominee! Bet the rightwingers just about choked on their vitriol at that one. /snickering at the thought of what Fox News would say...? Also? Colby in dress blues=WIN.

/sniffles at the vows/ OMG, Emma. So gorgeous. Of course, you do realize that now you absolutely have to go and write that summer night on the beach, right? And the delicious angst of Charlie and Colby splitting up? /is willing to bribe you however you please/ But I know that you're hesitant to write in this verse since it's L's bunny, so I shall refrain from pushing too much. /tries very hard not to pull the puppy eyes/

And the ending, oh! Just perfect. I love the vagueness of it, the fact that it's up to the reader which job Colby actually winds up getting. (And damn, that just spawned a potential bunny mutation in President!Andy 'verse. Gah.)

Also? You couldn't possibly have known this, but Forever And Ever Amen is one of my favourite songs ever. So to have it be the title of this fic? Was the cherry on top of a very wonderful cake.

Thank you so much, Emma. You rock like a rocking thing. /hugs you until you squeak/
