White Collar Fic: Man Shattered
Written for whitecollar100 Challenge #026 – Glass

Title: Man Shattered
Pairing/Characters: Peter, Neal, Garrett
Rating: PG13
Word Count: 200
Spoilers: Seasons 1 and 2
Summary: Peter stops Neal, but he can't keep him from breaking
Notes/Warnings: Read the disclaimer on my LJ

A consummate con man never shows his real face.

After Kate's death Peter watches Neal. And watches. And watches. But that momentary slip, that real honest anguish on his face right after the explosion... It doesn't return.

Neal's face is a mask and Peter knows the man behind it is in pieces, but he smiles and works on cases as if he's soldiering on.

He's not; of this Peter is certain.

So when he finally sees Neal aim a gun at Garrett Fowler, he knows he's seeing the real Neal, the one that hurts so bad it aches just to breathe, to be alive without the woman he risked everything for.

And when Peter gets Neal to lower the gun, not take the shot?

He sees that man shatter like glass, into too many pieces for anyone to put back together again.

That carefree Neal who sneakily charmed his way into his employ and his heart is gone. The brilliant criminal he respected has vanished too. The sentimental romantic who shared his hopes and dreams with an old wine bottle is no more.

All that's left is a broken man, bereft of love and destroyed by the desire for revenge.

Bonne annee a tout le monde!

(And yes, I am still too lazy to add the necessary accents in. Some things don't change from year to hear. /snickers/)

First new fic of the year! And it's not Numb3rs! /marvels/

Title inspired by Girl Interrupted, mostly because I already have a fic called Shattered. Hehehe

Thanks to the slashchat ladies for giving me feedback on this one.

Oh, Neal. I like this a lot.

Love this - it's a perfect character study - and you've absolutely nailed Neal, and his masks.

Thank you.

Whoa, this was very powerful. Made my stomach all knot up. I know it's too much to hope for seeing some post-Point Blank angst on the actual show, so I'm very thankful for fanfics such as this. And now I wanna go and pick up the pieces of Neal and put him back together. *sniff*

I have a strong feeling this is much more satisfying than the beginning of the second half of the season will be. This is just too perfect.

This is perfect. Perfect for the prompt the characters the show, just perfect.

GUH! This is awesomely painful and rings true. I know WC can be a fluffy fandom, but it has a darkness at the core and you really catch that here.

This perfectly shows Neal's inner turmoil. It's painful but it's true.

(I have to say I was a bit concerned when I read this because my own "glass" prompt fill bears some resemblance to it and I hope you won't think I copied. My beta had it before you published this.)

Popping by quickly to say thanks for all the reading and commenting on my fic!

To be honest, I've been so busy I haven't even been reading any of the WC100 fic so if you hadn't said anything I wouldn't have known you even had a Glass drabble! Still, not to worry. Prompts sometimes lead people down the same path, but it's extremely rare for them to write the same thing the same way so you're good.

Oh poor Neal but I'm so glad Peter will be there for him.

I love this - especially how Peter only knows Neal's wearing a mask because of how well he knows Neal, and how long he has to wait for it to crack. Like afiawri said, I may have to substitute this in my mental canon when the show gets back from hiatus (SO SOON!).
