Summary: As a little girl Amita visited her uncle's country house in India
Notes/Warnings: Read the disclaimer on my LJ

Uncle Prakash's house was far from the city lights of Chennai; Amita remembered how scary dark the drive was, worried Father would get lost on the lonely unlit roads..

Her Aunt Vani had tucked her into a guest bed that night as she cowered nervously, promising she'd like the country, just wait until morning.

Morning brought cousins and playing tag in the green meadows, catching dragonflies to gaze at their beautiful wings and eating fresh mangoes with juice dribbling down her chin.

Evening brought a feast: friends and family all reveling until well after sundown.

Night fell, black as coal again, but Amita was determined not to let it scare her anymore. She slipped out the door and ran fearlessly out into the open meadow under the moonlight.

She looked around, proud of her brave accomplishment.

Then she looked up.

A universe of bright stars, so many more than home back in California's smoggy skies, shone down on her in a breathtaking array of heavenly light.

Delighted, she spun in a circle, letting her arms and long hair fly out as she twirled, ever gazing upward. She spun, making her own orbit, imagining herself as one star among thousands - wondering how many stars there were, if they could be counted and if so, how?

Growing dizzy, she threw herself down to the soft grass even though her eyes never left the guardian stars who watched over her.

With childish fingers she pointed up and started counting. She was up to almost 200 by the time her worried father found her, scooped her up in his arms and carried her back indoors with gentle admonishments.

Amita counted thousands of stars that summer vacation and by the time she went back to school she'd learned two new big words: combinatorics and astrophysics.
