White Collar Fic: A Poor Substitute
Written for whitecollar100 Challenge #032 – Chocolate

Title: A Poor Substitute
Pairing/Characters: Neal, Neal's mother
Rating: PG13
Word Count: 200
Spoilers: What Happens in Burma
Summary: Little Neal knew he was a poor substitute for a real valentine
Notes/Warnings: Read the disclaimer on my LJ

Neal was always sharp, observant, even as a child. By the time he was seven he understood three things well: his father was dead, his mother was lonely and she was determined to remain single for the near future, despite his aunt's not so quiet whispers from the kitchen about how she really should get remarried.

He also understood Valentine's Day.

So while his mother helped him pick out a box of valentines for his second grade class, little Neal's eyes wandered to the other side of the holiday aisle, where several men were perusing heart-shaped boxes of chocolate.

He noticed his mother's longing glances, briefly at the anonymous men shopping and then lingering over the chocolate boxes themselves.

Neal got in trouble for being late home from school the next day and it took all of his allowance for the year that far, but when his mother woke up on the 14th there was a box of chocolates beside her bed.

Even after he grew up Neal knew he was a poor substitute for a real valentine, but he also knew his mother kept that garish red cardboard box in her closet for years after the chocolates were gone.

I had originally planned to write Neal/Alex chocolate porn (seeing as how they had more chemistry in Forging Bonds than Neal/Kate in bed), but I kind of wanted to go somewhere with Neal and chocolate that wasn't quite so obvious. Getting a bit of his backstory - raised by a single mother - was tantalizing so I definitely wanted to step back into that world to see if I could find the origins of the suave lady's man who exists today in the boy he once was.

Very lovely, very sweet. But not treacly or too sentimental.

Thank you.

Awwwwww. This is really wonderful and I can really see a young Neal doing this. People are really stretching for this prompt and it's nice to see. Thank you for this drabble.
