Written for melissima's 2011 Anti-Valentine Challenge

Title: How it Used to Be
Pairing/Characters: Peter/Elizabeth, Peter/Neal
Rating: PG13
Spoilers: Season 1
Summary: Elizabeth starts to see something familiar in Peter she once had for herself
Notes/Warnings: Read the disclaimer on my LJ

At first she gets it.

Neal's distraught, destroyed really. A loss that great leaves emotions raw and open, so much so that everyone around can't help but feel the slash of grief whenever they look at the person who just lost the love of their life.

Only after a while the feeling starts to resonate a little too strongly in Elizabeth.

She tells herself for weeks that Neal needs Peter to get through this, so she lets him go, eats dinner alone with Satchmo even on weekends, knowing Peter is doing all he can to help a friend through an impossibly difficult time.

But when Neal shows up at odd hours in need of consoling she watches them, heads together on the couch. Her husband's arm is around Neal's shaking shoulders; his hand is gripping Neal's trembling hand. Their voices are low, intimate, hushed - not for anyone's ears but their own.

She recognizes the expression on Peter's face only after a while; it's been so long since he looked at her that way. That deep concern... She'd seen it when she was panicked about her new business failing, when her father went into the hospital for emergency surgery, that time she thought she might be pregnant, but...

She'd felt so loved and cared for when Peter gazed at her like that, his sole focus on her. It was as if nothing and no one else existed in the world.

Only now he looks at Neal that way, not her.

Whatever Peter and Neal share, the two of them, it's something special - something she can never be a part of.

She beckons silently to Satchmo to follow her upstairs and leaves them alone to go pack a suitcase. She'll tell Peter it's so he can focus on taking care of Neal and he'll kiss her and thank her for being such an understanding wife.

Then she'll take the dog to her sister's and cry herself to sleep thinking about what was and how it used to be.

This was written for melissima's 2011 Anti-Valentine's Challenge.

It's a bit last minute, but I had this visual of Elizabeth being on the outside that was so very wrong that it was perfect for Anti-V day.

I may need to write some happy OT3 fic now to counter this gloom I'm left with. :-(

There are people who take a novel to describe the progression you've precisely limned here.

And in conclusion, owwwwwwwwwwww.
