076. Girlfriend

Excerpt from Wikipedia article: Elizabeth Vanderhoff

Death and Legacy

Just two weeks shy of her forty-seventh birthday Senator Vanderhoff collapsed on the Senate floor during a debate. She was taken to nearby George Washington University Hospital and pronounced dead on arrival. The mandatory autopsy showed a previously undetected heart defect that led to a massive heart attack.

Vanderhoff left behind a husband, Brian Archer, 51; a daughter, Alissa Archer Wilburn, 25; a son-in-law, Grant Wilburn, 29; and a granddaughter, Zoe Wilburn, 2.

The funeral was televised across her home state of Idaho and reached the highest ratings for any local programming in over a decade. Her husband had stated Elizabeth's long time desire to be interred with her parents in the family plot just outside of Boise.

With her death, Senator Jim Risch became the senior senator from Idaho. Governor Brad Little appointed then little known FBI Agent Colby Granger to fill the remaining year of Vanderhoff's term. The choice was at first an unpopular one as detractors complained that Granger hadn't lived in the state for years, that his unmarried status showed a lack of stability and that he flatly avoided any questions about a steady girlfriend back in California - the location he spent all of his time off once he moved to D.C. Later the former Army officer won over his constituency with heartfelt speeches about duty, honor and the virtues of being from Idaho, so much so he was re-elected to a full term in his own right.

Senator Granger successfully lobbied the state legislature to rename Boise's Shoreline Park to Vanderhoff Park in honor of his predecessor. A scholarship was also instituted in her name at the University of Idaho, funded by the Archer family and the Friends of Elizabeth Vanderhoff non-profit scholarship society.

246. Boyfriend

Excerpt from Wikipedia article: Charles Eppes

Personal Life

While Dr. Eppes in his 20s was often referred to as a "rock star of math", he surprised his colleagues by remaining single in his 30s despite an assumed long term romance with his protege Dr. Amita Ramanujan, whom Dr. Eppes refers to as 'a good friend'. Rumors about the mathematician's sexual orientation were confirmed when Dr. Eppes himself admitted he had a longtime boyfriend outside of academia. In the biographical tome, "Modern Renaissance Men", Dr. Eppes's brother, Don Eppes - an Assistant Director with the FBI - confirmed that Dr. Eppes indeed was in a committed relationship with a man. He stated, "I know who he is and he's a good man. He's just not out to his family so Charlie and I have to respect his need for privacy even if we wish it didn't have to be that way."

Speculation as to who the mystery man was has failed to turn up any plausible candidates. Dr. Eppes is rarely seen outside of his circle of friends and family from academia and law enforcement, though he has begun attending more political functions - most notably for California State Assemblywoman Nicole Betancourt and U.S. Senator Colby Granger, both of whom are former FBI teammates who worked under Agent Don Eppes in Los Angeles.

Most recently, however, the web site "Most Eligible in Academia" updated Dr. Eppes status from "committed relationship" to "single, not dating", citing whispers that his long term long distance relationship had come to a quiet end. Dr. Eppes refused to comment on his private life when cornered by a reporter at the Fields Medal ceremony, using the opportunity instead to congratulate fellow mathematican Dr. Marshall Penfield on his win for his work on deep current set theory.

151. Devotion

Excerpt from Wikipedia article: Colby Granger

Around the end of his third year in the Senate, Senator Granger called a surprise press conference on Capitol Hill. Media outlets crowded the handsome and single junior Senator from Idaho when rumors sparked that he would be revealing a secret relationship. To the shock of the nation, the Senator not only revealed that the party was interested in him as a potential Vice Presidential candidate, but also that he was homosexual. Rather than hearing about a girlfriend in the shadows, reporters were told of a man in California and listened in while Senator Granger made an impassioned plea to the man he left behind to serve his country in politics. Without naming names, it was made clear that the two had been in a long term relationship prior to his appointment by Idaho Governor Brad Little to fulfill the late Senator Vanderhoff's final year and that the relationship had ended as a result of Senator Granger deciding to seek a second full term.

The nationally televised press conference has been a source of endless debate, most notably amongst the religious right, the military and GLBT supporters, the latter of which called it 'one of the greatest signs of true devotion in our times' versus Fox News' assessment of 'political career suicide'. Surprisingly no one outside of the extreme right called for Granger's resignation while both Governor Little and presumptive Presidential nominee Senate Majority Leader Jason Keyes, flanked by his wife Janet during his speech, publicly offered Granger their support.

Following the scandal, polls showed the percentage of Americans willing to accept a gay man in the White House actually rose 4.9 percent over five years earlier, bringing the total percentage of respondents answering "would consider a gay candidate" to 46.7 percent.

214. Engagement

Excerpts from Wikipedia article: Engagement of Colby Granger and Charles Eppes

Engagement Announcement

Having begun as a media spectacle starting with the press conference in which Senator Granger asked his California based math genius former boyfriend to take him back, the couple's engagement was likewise covered in the press. News crews and paparazzi swarmed the Senator just after he landed at Los Angeles International Airport and recorded his reunion with his long denied love on film. The two men embraced and kissed without a care as to how many thousands of people were viewing. Later, when they were asked to give a statement, Senator Granger admitted he had shared a conciliatory phone call with Dr. Eppes just after the press conference. "He didn't just agree to take me back," the former Army officer professed, clearly emotional, "He proposed." When a reporter asked if he'd said yes, both men laughed and kissed again, followed by Granger's smiling retort. "What do you think?" Two days afterwards, the couple published a tasteful announcement in the Los Angeles Times, stating they were planning a small wedding very soon.

Media Reaction

Still photographs of the reunion spread across the globe and were featured in dozens of publications. Video was ranked number one on YouTube for over two weeks. People Magazine ruled the reunion greeting "Kiss of the Year". The MTV Awards granted the double punch of the press conference and the airport engagement reunion as their "ZOMG" moment of the year. The GLAAD Media Awards even coined a new award and honored CNN as the first recipient for their respectful handling of Granger's revelations. Finally, even though the couple turned down the option for a reality show on her network, Oprah Winfrey called their reunion "one of the most romantic moments in our lifetime."

emma. oh, emma. i really really enjoyed this. the whole news-report-as-a-pov-device and the telling of their story from an outsider's pov and how you had to read between the lines to see how their love story evolved. And the big romantic moment! i could picture it perfectly in my head, with the cameras clicking and colby and charlie completely uncaring, wrapped up only in the other. /sigh/ guh guh guh. you totally got me on this one. PUDDLE OF GOO, TABLE FOR ONE! seriously. guh.

I'll try to say something more coherent later. Right now I'm just a puddle of goo.
Tamannaswingandswirl on March 1st, 2011 01:34 pm (UTC)
OK. Now that I have calmed down some, I shall attempt to post a mature, coherent, comment.

Yeah. Not working so well, because OMG, Emma, I love this! Initially I thought that they were news articles, which warmed the cockles of the wannabe journalist portion of my heart, but then I realized that they were Wikipedia articles and I was just like, :O. Because that is awesome.

And OMG, Emma. You took what can be a dry, factual medium and used it to weave this gorgeous love story and I am just in awe. Just the little touches... the renaming of the park, the shift in Charlie's status on the dating site, the opinion poll, the new award from GLAAD, Oprah Winfrey offering them a show... Just... So. Much. Love. /hearts/

And I've told you how much I love your deft handling of which party Colby represents, but it bears repeating. And I'm going to hold out hope that, if RL follows fiction, members of both parties can be as gracious as the ones you've portrayed here.

Wow, Emma. I could write a paen to this fic and it wouldn't be enough. It's gorgeous and perfect and I love it so. /hugs it and squeezes it and calls it George/ I'll even forgive you the extra fangs my President!Andy bunny grew today.

Brava, Emma. Brava. /hands you a big bouquet of tulips/

I already loved the other side of the verse! Add this one to the list! (I need to reread the other one again...)
