Numb3rs Fic: Bridging the Divide
Written for numb3rs100 Challenge #305 – Divide

Title: Bridging the Divide
Pairing/Characters: Don, Charlie
Rating: PG13
Word Count: 200
Spoilers: Season 6
Summary: After being so close for so many years it's hard to be so far apart
Notes/Warnings: Read the disclaimer on my LJ

He feels it, feels the loss.

There's an empty space in his life where his brother once was.

He's got a beautiful wife, a new home and a baby on the way, but there's still a void.

All those years they were apart... It didn't bother either of them. But once they were reunited, once they started working together, saving lives together...

They were a team: brothers united for the first time in their lives.

Now thousands of miles of continent and ocean span between them.

Where it is day for one, it is night for the other.

An occasional email can't take the place of a warm body on the sofa, a warm voice reassuring, a warm heart expressing family love with the most casual of touches.

A hand reaches for a phone just before it begins to ring.

"Hey... Home from work yet?"

"Just got in." Don settles contentedly into his couch, not feeling quite so alone anymore. "What's up with you? It's late over there."

"Nothing," Charlie says, his voice soft despite the crackling on the international line. "I just miss you."

With only a few words, Charlie bridges the divide.

"I miss you too, Buddy..."

Beautiful. I love the emotion - as though they were suprised they would miss each other. The hand reaching for the phone before it even rings was a great touch. And, I have to add, I know how they feel. I miss them, too.

I am a terrible horrible person. You wrote a touching family moment and all I can do is envision clandestine phone sex. *shakes head at myself*

(But that's what happens next, right?)

It's nice seeing them just miss each other as brothers.

Lovely, as always. I really enjoyed seeing this side, where the brothers miss each other. The part about them not missing each other before being different than now after working together really hit home. Nice job. :)

Aww, nice to see them missing one another having gotten used to working together.

Oh, I adore this. I have this exact time difference with my best friend in the world (aside from my fiance), and this capture that missing piece perfectly.

Oh, *Eppes*.

Hey there! Nice to see your name around the fandom again! I'm always happy when I do. :-)

I've often had people I loved a half a world away (and some that just felt that far even if they were only hundreds of miles away) so I really tried to capture how that felt for them and us.

Thanks for taking the time to read and comment!

Sweet and lovable! I especially liked the sentence about how this distance is different than the one that existed when they were younger. How things have changed :) As always, a wonderful fic!

Thank you, Laura! It's hard not to adore our boys when they're like this, isn't it?

You got it! Especially imagining Don with his thinking-pouty look (the one from the end of the episode with the chain of gang killings that Charlie was tracing) while he's talking on the phone.

Great story and very sweet! I'm a fairly new Numb3rs fan and when I went looking for fic I found a lot of great writers. Your stories are definitely the among the best!
