Title: Compassion Amongst Wolves
Pairing/Characters: Paul, Alva
Rating: PG13
Spoilers: 1x01-1x06
Summary: Prompt - Work
Notes/Warnings: Read the disclaimer on my LJ

Paul expected Evelyn to be sitting beside his hospital bed when he woke, still working on knitting the sweater she'd started for Matty's birthday, but instead he found Alva.

"I got a call from the insurance company," he began without preamble, reminding Paul of Evelyn's admonishment that the taciturn Scot had been raised by wolves. "A rather interesting conversation."

"Oh?" Paul shifted in bed, wincing and putting his hand to his temple as even the slightest movement made his head pound.

"Yes, they asked me if you were planning on getting these head injuries often because if you were, they now had a lovely plan to earn SQ frequent flier miles for each of your hospitalizations."

Paul blinked over at Alva's perfectly serious face. Forget wolves.

Then Alva's face shifted, breaking out into a bemused grin. "Clearly you need more time to recover if you even remotely thought I was serious."

"I knew you were joking," Paul said, annoyed at hearing the defensiveness in his voice. "I was just peeved that SQ was going to get the miles. I was hoping to use them for a vacation. Maybe somewhere in Switzerland where my skull and I could spend some quality time with a really good MRI machine."

"We could put you in the Large Hadron Collider and pummel you with subatomic particles," Alva mused. "It would be a slightly more mundane way to injure you compared with most of your past causes."

Paul barely stifled a painful laugh, his arm wrapping around his bruised ribcage. "No fair. No making me laugh."

"My apologies." Alva rose, closing up the book he'd been reading. "I arranged with Evie and Father Calero to sit with you in shifts while you're in the hospital."

"Poppi's coming?"

"He should be here any minute now," Alva explained. "I know he's a busy man, but he assured me he would make time to spend with you during your recovery. I wholeheartedly agreed with that plan. I don't expect you back at work until you feel ready and the doctor gives you a clean bill of health."

Paul looked closely at Alva who merely gestured his confusion at the extra scrutiny.

"So Evie was wrong then. You weren't raised by wolves."

Alva huffed out a chuckle, but there was little mirth behind it.

"Only one, I'm afraid. But that damage is done."

New Miracles fic! This comes with a little shoutout to my Miracles friends deejay and sailorhathor, both of whom had a birthday recently.

I know work and school have kept me crazy busy, but I wanted you both to know I have not forgotten the fandom and am indeed in the midst of a series rewatch as I drag my new housemate isabeau into the fold!

I confess I had this big angsty poignant fic based on the prompt Life planned, but then this is what came out instead. I had to go looking for another prompt because the whole speech Alva gave Paul in my head in the original plan never appeared. Huh. Go figure. This one's far more amusing and light so I rather like it. Hopefully the other bunny will be given form at some point, despite it being a bit on the pretentious side.

So to Laurel and Deejay, I hope you both had lovely birthdays and you enjoy this fic, belated as it is. ♥

Re: Confession
Yaaay birfday fic FTW! \o/

Thanks so much, hon!

Alva's clever "Large Hadron Collider" reference must mean that he thinks that Paul has black holes in his head, right...? *g*

Hee! I'm not even sure what this means but it still made me laugh. :)
