"Here... Let me help you."

Colby took over for Charlie's trembling hands and tugged the straps on the kevlar vest into position on his small frame.

"Thanks," Charlie mumbled, running his hands over the vest, treating like a foreign entity. "It feels weird. I don't see how you guys can wear them and go about your work like normal."

"You wouldn't need this if you'd just agree to stay in the safehouse," Colby chided, his voice more kind than admonishing.

"I can't." Charlie's anxious hands began to wring. "I have to see Don."

Colby took Charlie by the shoulders, ducking down his head to catch his eye. "His condition is stable; the doctor told us so. And you know the hospital will call if there's any change."

Charlie's barely stoic expression started to crumble. "I know and I know that the people who shot Don are out there aiming for me too, but I can't..." His voice faltered as his shoulders slumped in grief. "I can't just sit here and hide, not knowing if I might be losing him."

Colby folded Charlie into his arms, holding him close, lowering his voice to a soothing whisper.

"Don's strong. He'll pull through. I know you and your dad hate being locked up, but it's for your own safety. So please, let me keep my promise to Don; let me protect you. David and the team are going to get these guys, trust me. But for now..."

He couldn't bring himself to finish, the sound of harsh tears flowing told him words were no longer any use. So Colby let out a breath and just held Charlie close, wishing he could offer more than strength and words of hope in the face of a nameless faceless enemy that wanted the Eppes men dead.

:-) I love it when you write Colby/Charlie even if it's a little ouchy.
