Numb3rs Fic: An Unfinished Message
Written for numb3rs100 Challenge #34 - Incomplete

Title: An Unfinished Message
Pairing/Characters: Charlie, Don, Megan
Rating: PG
Word Count: 100
Spoilers: None
Summary: Charlie understands Don's unspoken message
Notes/Warnings: Read the disclaimer on my LJ

"Where is he?" Charlie yells as he bursts into the emergency room.

"They're taking him in to surgery now. This way!" Megan pulls at his arm, but it's Charlie who's fastest through the doors, running alongside Don's gurney as they wheel him towards the operating room.

"I'm here, Don..." Charlie grasps his brother's hand tightly and looks down at him, meeting his frightened eyes, ignoring the blood red everywhere oh God no...

"Charlie..." Don's voice falters as he starts to slip away. "Wanted... tell you..."

Charlie trembles at the silence that follows.

"I know, Don," he says softly. "I know."

*Nods* I so like "ambiguous" fics like this (of any length) that can be slash or can be two brothers who are growing closer. No need to pin it down.

Very nicely done.

Thank you. A hundred words doesn't give an author much room for play, even when it comes to subtext. Yes, the fic does allow for the reader to decide for themselves what they'd like the relationship to be for themselves. The key for me was that it was moot. Don's last words would be exactly the same regardless - he'd tell Charlie he loved him.

Thanks,

Gah. Angst.

I love it. Though the idea of one of the brothers dying is tremendously depressing (in the sense that if they ever did it on the show, I would promptly go into a state of catatonia) it makes for good angstfic.

Nice job.

Thank you. Not only did I deliberately make the relationship vague, I also tried to leave some wiggle room as to whether Don truly died or simply lost consciousness. Some folks really hate deathfic, so this is obtuse enough that you can choose to believe he just blacked out before he could finish what he wanted to say.

If one of the brothers died on the show there would be no show. Of that, I am certain. ;-)

Thanks,
