277. Blank

He stared at the crisp blank sheet of paper before him. He'd vacillated between using a sheet of notepaper - too casual, printer paper - too generic, his work letterhead - too distant and her stationery, which seemed overtly cruel. In the end he'd gone online and procrastinated by looking for the best template to turn his heavy ivory resume paper into something akin to stationery before realizing that it was the perfect paper as is.

Only it remained blank, immune to his anxious hovering pen and his equally anxious thoughts.

How did one begin the end of a relationship?

209. Write

Only by assuring himself that it was a draft and not the final version was he able to finally get words on the page.

His hand trembled as he wrote, but the cursive on the page seemed more steady than he felt inside.

'First, I want you to know that I love you. I've known that for years you'd be a part of my life forever. I can't imagine my life without you in it.'

He faltered then because he wasn't lying. He couldn't imagine her being out of his life.

He just didn't want to be married to her.

042. Words

After that, the words came faster.

"We were so close for so long I never really noticed when friendship turned into love. Everyone else saw before I did. But it did and we were happy. I married you believing we'd always be that way."

A haggard breath was drawn from a heavy chest.

"But things changed. When I wasn't looking we changed back from lovers to friends, spouses to roommates, partners to colleagues."

Tears welled up in his eyes.

"You deserve better. You deserve someone who can love you and keep loving you. I'm just not that man. I'm sorry."

253. Shred

The ink dried on the page as his eyes dried, his emotions coming back under control.

His head jerked up as he heard a car pull into the driveway.

Grabbing the sheet of paper, he turned on his home office shredder, feeding it in until it was just a flutter of ivory diamonds.

"Hi, hon!" Amita gave Charlie a kiss on the cheek as she bustled through the front door on her way to the kitchen, shopping bags slung over both arms. "I got you a nice pie at the bakery!"

He swallowed, forced a smile and followed.

"Thanks, hon."

Anyone not think it was Charlie/Amita? /curious/

I knew it would be Charlie, somehow, from the moment I saw the header. As soon as I saw "her" I knew it was Amita he was attempting to break up with. (My other guess was, of course, Don.)

I actually had originally pondered Don/Robin, but just before I started writing it Charlie/Amita is what stuck. Charlie seems more of the letter writing type. Don's too kinesthetic to break up in a letter.

I wasn't sure in the first drabble but I was pretty sure by the second. I do hope Charlie gets up the guts to say what he had written.

Hugs them both. Hopes for a happy ending.
