Written for numb3rs100 Challenge #319 – Mountain

Title: Coming Down the Mountain
Pairing/Characters: Billy
Rating: PG13
Word Count: 200
Spoilers: Man Hunt
Summary: Backcountry skiing finds Billy alone in the pristine wilderness
Notes/Warnings: Read the disclaimer on my LJ

Backcountry skiing wasn't as much fun solo, but Billy had had to learn over the years that all his vacation buddies eventually hooked up with women and couldn't spend time - or wouldn't take the risk - on some adrenaline pumping downhill on the most pristine powder of all.

Glancing back up at the mountain, Billy adjusted his gear one last time then pushed off.

The wind was brisk against his skin, sprays of snow obscured the vision through his goggles, but the speed... His heart raced at the sensation of gliding almost weightlessly down the steep hill - the sensation more like floating on air than skimming over snow.

It was all over too soon, hours of hiking up disappearing in scant seconds of skiing back down.

He came to a stop at the base of the run, shed his goggles and let out a celebratory whoop.

The icy wilderness around him was barren of life; no witnesses to his perfect run, no one to brag to at the lodge.

A sickening sound caught his ear, an all too loud and wrong sound.

He turned his head to look, terror stealing his breath.

A low rumble.

Then a roar.
