Numb3rs Fic: In a Fraction of a Second
Written for ian_nikki - Memories Challenge
Crossposted to numb3rs_het

Title: In a Fraction of a Second
Pairing/Characters: Ian/Nikki, OC
Rating: PG13
Spoilers: Sniper Zero, High Exposure, Angels and Devils
Summary: Ian has given Nikki so many wonderful memories and she wants to return the favor
Notes/Warnings: Read the disclaimer on my LJ

Nikki remembers that fateful Dodgers game. Oh, she could never tell Don or Charlie - the jealousy would be the death of her. Ian's idea of a ball game wasn't anywhere near the cheap seats. He sauntered into a VIP box like he owned it and after the game took her to meet the manager and a slew of the star players. She'd said goodnight that night like she wasn't impressed, but hours later she was still aquiver at finally being on of the privileged insiders.

Nikki remembers Ian's idea of a seafood dinner. The deep sea fishing boat was crazy huge and Ian's friend Stephan even brought his own chef to cook the swordfish they'd caught. Watching that huge fish captured sent an odd rush of adrenaline through her and her admiration for Ian's talents definitely increased her attraction even if she didn't let herself get sucked in - yet.

Nikki remembers their first weekend away. They'd slept together - and what a glorious mess of adrenaline and pent up sexual energy that had been - but this was about taking their time. No distractions. She wasn't sure how many women - if any - Ian had brought to this rustic cabin in the woods, but the care with which he heated river rocks in fire-warmed water, laid them on her back to relax her then massaged her taut muscles made her realize that this wasn't all about sex: Ian made it all about her.

Nikki remembers their bad shoots. Her own had been a suicide by cop who'd fashioned a fake gun and pointed it at her. She'd felt like an idiot rookie shooting him, but Ian soothed her, reminding her that in the split second it took to take or save a life, the live that mattered were the innocent, not anyone who raised any sort of weapon. Besides, she'd given him what he wanted: a way out. It was a painful gift, but what he needed. Ian, after his, refused to tell her what went wrong, but let her hold him close through the night until he finally cracked at dawn, weeping into her bosom until he fell asleep, exhausted yet cleansed.

Nikki remembers taking Ian home to meet the family. She'd carefully only told them he was a fellow FBI agent until he left after the meal, having been a perfect gentleman. Her brothers started dissing on him, making assumptions, and she let them get just far enough before she dropped that he wasn't just any agent, he was a top instructor at Quantico and the country's third best sniper. You could have heard a pin drop after that and it was that silence that Nikki relished for months afterwards.

Nikki remembers meeting Ian's mother. This was a side of Ian she'd never seen before: quiet, almost silent, and completely deferential. Mrs. Edgerton was a frail being, devastated by lymphoma, but still clearly a strong matriarch beneath her deeply wrinkled skin. When Nikki gently but firmly corrected her on an aspect of the FBI, Ian and his mother had shared a look. Apparently she had passed some sort of test, because afterwards Ian had confided that his mother had told him that she really liked Nikki.

All of this Nikki remembers in the fraction of a second where her breath is caught in her chest, Ian is on one knee before her and all she can see is the light glinting on a diamond solitaire.

She realizes Ian is waiting for her answer.

And Nikki remembers she's already made up her mind.

"Yes," she breathes, joy bubbling up in her like she's never known before. "Yes, I will marry you."

Confession
This was written for the lovely mustangcandi as a birthday gift. She's been an ardent supporter of Ian/Nikki from the start and while I've not been as good a supporter of her ian_nikki comm since I went back to school I do miss writing the pairing for it.

Candi, I'm sorry it took so long to post it, and you're probably asleep right now, but I took the monster of all naps today by accident. Gah! Not fun. But I still got it up on your actual birthday which is saying something because last year I was made of fail and didn't do anything ficcy. Consider this a jumbo sized double drabble to make up for it. /big grin/

Thanks,

Emma DeMarais

I squeed hard core when I saw that not only had you written fic for my birthday, you wrote Ian/Nikki AND ian_nikki challenge fic! *happy contented sigh* Thanks for supporting the community and for writing me such lovely fic for my birthday. You're so good to me. *squeezes*

I loved, loved, loved this. Like River, I love the different snapshots of Ian and Nikki together - snapshots that I wish were canon!! *sighs* I always imagined Ian being a man with a taste for the finer things (obviously if he had enough sense to be attracted to Nikki. hehe.) So, naturally I loved that it wasn't just a Dodgers game; it wasn't just a seafood dinner. I loved also that you didn't make it all sunshine and roses too - the bad shoots part had me all choked up because it made this so much more real. Candi wants more Ian/Nikki canon. Damn you CBS.

And of course, the end took my breath away. I didn't see that coming and I LOVE, LOVE, LOVE that you turned me into a pile of goo. Ian and Nikki, committing to each other like that when they both have been dubbed as "loners" just makes my heart soar. *more contented sighing*

THANK YOU THANK YOU THANK YOU!

SWEET! Loved this to pieces! I want a follow up where they tell the team about the engagement... and Ian tells Charlie he's NOT invited to the wedding! ("You didn't invite me to yours, why should I invite you to mine?")
