Brimstone Fic: The Late Hours
Posted to lucifen

Title: The Late Hours
Pairing/Characters: Zeke/Rosalyn
Rating: PG13
Spoilers: Pilot
Summary: She knows she married a cop but that's not why she married him
Notes/Warnings: Read the disclaimer on my LJ

It's nights like this, and they're not all that uncommon, that it hits her.

Rosalyn's long ready for bed - having spent the last hour patiently watching the minute hand make its rounds in the nightstand alarm clock - but Zeke's still up long past his 'just a few more minutes, hon' deadline. Again.

Rising with a rare self-pitying sigh she'd never let him hear, she heads down the hall and leans against the door jamb in silence, watching him enraptured by his only mistress.

Zeke's hunched over his desk in the harsh pool of unforgiving white light from his desk lamp, the oversized one he got because the previous one didn't illuminate all of his spread out files sufficiently.

And he's got his files out again. Not every case captures him so, but she can tell the signs: the creases around his eyes get deeper, the rings under them darker; the ghosts behind his eyes return, specters of death he can't seem to leave at the office no matter how well meaning a husband he is.

Sometimes it's a case where children have been hurt or killed. Sometimes it's senseless violence. Sometimes it's a serial and the police just can't catch a break.

Rosalyn knew who he was from the start. She knew she was marrying a cop; that wasn't a surprise or a deal-breaker. But in these quiet moments she remembers why she married him despite him being a cop.

He's focused, intent, ready to put aside his own ego for help just to do what's right. He'll eschew sleep, food, sex and love because nothing's more important than helping save people's lives.

She married him because he's a good man.

But still she drags him off to bed, turning off that beacon of a work light for him; the files will be there in the morning and the next morning and the next month.

If she wants to have this good man's children she has to claim him for the part of the day that's rightly hers as his wife.

The late hours.

Awww. It's nice to see them as a couple before all hell broke loose. Thanks for this!

That's exactly what I was going for! Them, in love and normal, before it all went to hell - literally!

Glad you liked it!

Yay Brimstone! I really need to find a source for this show.

This is a great slice-of-life-before-chaos, and I hope it makes some of your fans check out Brimstone!

This really should have come out on DVD. /toddlerfists/

I'm glad to have a few people in my life who can understand and enjoy it though.

It makes me so pleased to have friends like you who can appreciate Brimstone fic. It was such a good show. I'd feel so sad if no one read my stories for it. Thank you.

A lovely slice of life. Makes it understandable how Zeke wants to get back to it. Lovely Rosalyn POV.

Thank you!

I almost want to write the flipside that's not pre-series, in which we see Zeke doing his stalker thing and regretting that he didn't leave her with any kids to keep her company once he was gone. You always think there's more time...
