Numb3rs/White Collar Fic: Taking the Heat
Written for whitecollar100 Challenge #053 – Heat
Crossposted to n3crossovers

Title: Taking the Heat (Sequel to Red, White and Two)
Series/Universe: Red, White and Two
Pairing/Characters: Neal, Mozzie, Matthew
Rating: PG13
Word Count: 300
Spoilers: Man Hunt (Numb3rs), Bottlenecked, Payback (White Collar)
Summary: Neal's on the run when he gets news from home
Notes/Warnings: Read the disclaimer on my LJ

Neal still had the photos; they were all he had.

Matthew Keller was a cunning bastard. He'd taken pictures of Peter and Elizabeth at their most vulnerable: Peter jogging without his badge or gun, Elizabeth alone in a dark parking garage after a client meeting, both of them at a sunny cafe having lunch completely unaware of the killer who had them in his sights.

Indeed imposed over every photo was a sniper's target sight, proving that each photo could have been a kill but wasn't.

"It's time for us to end this, Caffrey. Man to man. Ditch the anklet, leave New York. I'll even give you a 24 hour head start," the cryptic message on his voicemail had said. It was the postscript that chilled him to the bone. "If you don't, well I'll just have to tell my sniper friend to use bullets instead of film on your friends the Burkes."

Neal wasn't a fan of Delaware, but it was somewhere he figured Matthew wouldn't look for him. He picked up the New York Times at a newsstand near his hotel and turned to the classifieds to look for any message from Mozzie.

For his safety he couldn't tell Mozzie where he was, but at least he could get news from home - via coded message of course.

Back in his hotel room he found the message and set to decoding it. He kept hoping one would say 'Keller in jail, safe to come home'.

Not this time.

'Suit brought in FR - Agent Cooper. Heads up.'

Fugitive recovery... That meant they believed he was on the run.

As much as he dreaded going back to prison, he couldn't risk getting Peter and Elizabeth killed.

If being on the run kept them alive, he could take the heat.

The slashchat ladies should be doing a double take right about now. This is *not* the second drabble I showed them! I wrote a second right off the bat, but when I decided to expand the series I figured it would be better later. Ergo new number two drabble!

:D This is going to be a really cat and mouse. Or is that Caffrey and mouse?

Or Keller and mouse or Billy and cat and mouse or... ;-)

We'll have to wait and see!

Wow! I thought I'd read these already. What a nice surprise!!! :D

I heart this series -and you- so hard. ♥

You read a draft of the first one in chat, but the second one from chat is on ice waiting for a better place in the series. :-)

Thanks for the inspiration!

I really liked this, but please remind me where the Numb3rs crossover is here. I have seen all the episodes, but it wasn't one of the shows I cared deeply for, and have since forgotten some of the characters and storylines, it seems.

If you read the first installment, Red, White and Two, (which is much more N3) it introduces Billy Cooper from the Season 1 episode Man Hunt. He was Don Eppes' former partner when Don worked in Fugitive Recovery.

Thanks for giving it a chance!

Ah, gotcha. Just read your other drabble and looked him up and found a YouTube video. I seriously couldn't remember him, but I like that you brought him into the collarverse. Works very well. :o)

Thanks. I thought so, seeing as how Peter is within his rights to call in help from FR to work Keller's case at least. He is a fugitive in the literal meaning of the word so it works since they're both FBI.

That and my roomie is the biggest Max Martini (Billy Cooper) fan in the fandom. /big grin/

Not that it makes any difference, but for the one episode he was in? He gets slashed with Don SO much for that one appearance it's meant hundreds and hundreds of fic just from one brief hour of TV. Kind of amazing, but then good chemistry feeds all shippers...

Oh NEAL. *sighs*

Yes, I think he might have taken martyr lessons from Don for this crossover. ;-)

Oh poor Neal.
