White Collar Fic: The Smell of Freshly Turned Earth
Written for whitecollar100 Challenge #060 – Earth

Title: The Smell of Freshly Turned Earth
Pairing/Characters: Neal, OCs
Rating: PG13
Word Count: 100
Spoilers: What Happens in Burma
Summary: Little Neal loved playing in the dirt as a boy
Notes/Warnings: Read the disclaimer on my LJ

As a little boy Neal loved playing in the dirt: making mudpies, miniature forts or even just a mess was great fun. A hot bath afterwards washed it all away with his mother's gentle scolding.

Dressed in his flannel PJs he'd wait up, long after his mother had tucked him in, for his father to come home and tell him good night. Those brief moments alone together were most of what Neal remembered about his father before he died.

What he remembered after was the smell of freshly turned earth in the cemetery.

He never played in the dirt again.

This is ouchie but also wonderful. Sent is such an evocative thing and most people can bring up the smell of fresh earth to go with this drabble. Wonderful work.
