293. Baby

Nothing else in David's life had ever been as stressful as this: coming out to his family, going on his first very public date with a guy, making it official at the FBI that he was not only gay but marrying a man... All of that faded into insignificance in the face of his impending fatherhood.

Colby reassured him repeatedly that Fran was an old pro at childbirth, being a professional surrogate. Colby's son Tyler was her third and now David's daughter would be her sixth baby - all healthy. Still, David paced a groove into the hospital hallway once Fran got her epidural, waiting anxiously for the serious labor to begin.

Tyler was tucked into bed at home, being looked after by David's mother and sister Linda, but David still wondered if they were letting him stay up late, hoping for news of his baby sister. He'd drawn pictures of her in his kindergarten class, dressed in all pink and colored in with David's chocolate brown skin even though she wasn't likely to be quite as dark toned as he was.

Every few minutes Colby would rub his back or squeeze his hand, just being there for him. By the time Fran felt sure the baby was on the way, he was a nervous wreck. Waiting in the birthing room where he couldn't pace felt like torture, but David reminded himself it was nothing compared to what Fran was going to endure on his behalf.

So he sat as still as he could and let his mind do the frantic racing for him.

A daughter, a baby, a little person made out of him. His genes would live on, just like Colby's would in Tyler.

It took his breath away and scared him to death at the same time.

271. Mess

He'd read books, watched videos and asked Fran questions until she very politely suggested that he was just looking for reassurance not information. Apparently nothing was reassurance enough, or preparation enough, for the reality of childbirth.

Far from a beautiful moment it was a cacophony of people yelling, Fran going all red in the face and sweaty from pushing and a disturbing number of bloody wads of gauze in his peripheral vision.

Fran held his hand so tight she'd have made him bleed if she hadn't cut all her nails down to nothing in preparation. He'd wanted to be here with her, wanted to go through all this, but David was overwhelmed - fighting down a panic that something was going to go horribly wrong.

Life just seemed so scarily fragile in that moment. His mind flashed back to all the history books in school where they'd kept mentioning women who died in childbirth. Despite modern medicine it still happened: mothers died on the table, babies were rushed off to the neonatal ICU barely breathing and some were stillborn.

David tried to shake off his visions of terror and focus just on Fran's face. Each huff and each puff were so determined... She really was amazing - someone who chose to go through this for those who couldn't have children on their own. Such a gift and yet in Colby's case she'd asked nothing in return. David had almost had to force her to take her normal fee from him; she was still so grateful for Colby saving her life she was ready to give up a second year of her life to gift him with another child.

Glancing away, David caught sight of the floor - now a mess littered with bloody gauze - and started to pray silently and fervently.

250. Scream

It all became a blur: the doctors and nurses, Fran screaming as she doubled over, Colby as helpless as he was to do anything...

Guilt swamped David with each wrenching labor pain Fran endured. He'd seen people shot before and they looked to be in less pain than she was each time a fresh contraction hit her. The completely irrational part of his brain wished he could undo this, take away all her pain even if the cost was never meeting the little person inside her who would carry his DNA and his name until she married.

Pleas were sent up to heaven with every push, a blatantly greedy request for the divine to intervene and stop the pain.

And then the pleas were answered.

Once it began it happened so fast David almost missed it. One last unearthly yell from the very core of Fran's being, the excited murmurs of the nurses and the doctor's exclamation of success.

As he stared rapt he watched his daughter enter the world, crying out her arrival to all present.

The nurses rapidly cleaned her up and wrapped her in a blanket, but David couldn't take his eyes off her for even a second.

When they went to hand her to Fran she gestured to David instead.

David just stood there, paralyzed for a second, then held out his arms - trembling only on the inside as they placed the precious bundle in his arms.

"My baby girl," he murmured in absolute awe.

She opened her eyes and gazed up at him, reaching awkwardly up to him with perfect little coffee colored fingers each with a tiny perfect fingernail on them.

He took hold of her tiny hand and kissed it reverently.

His eyes welled with joyful tears.

"Hello sweetie... I'm your Daddy."

290. Sleep

Everyone had crashed hard afterwards, completely exhausted. Only David couldn't seem to sleep. He kept feeling like he was going to miss something, a moment in his daughter's life that would never be repeated. He wasn't even dozing when they brought the baby in in a bassinet for a feeding.

Once Fran was done she handed the baby to David to hold for a while and he stood, rocking her in his arms quietly as Fran drifted off again.

The baby stayed awake a bit longer, her yawns becoming ever more adorable as they grew wider and wider.

David kept trying to memorize her even though he knew there would be tons of photographs later to remember this moment by. She had a dusting of dark fuzzy hair, wide eyes, pouty lips, a tiny copy of his own nose and beautiful skin that was softer than he could ever imagine and smelled so much like a baby he wanted to find some way to record that scent for the rest of his life.

As he gazed down at her she screwed up her face before letting out a tiny sneeze. In that moment, David felt a memory rush back to him from his childhood. When he was little, his grandmother Trudy could always make him smile by screwing up her face before kissing him with a loud "Mwah!" He'd adored his maternal grandmother; he'd missed her horribly since she passed away.

The sneeze had to have woken Colby because David heard him rise and felt strong arms wrap around them both.

"Any decisions on a name yet?" Colby whispered, kissing him just below his ear.

In that moment the decision seemed to be made for him: past and present all rolled up into one beloved bundle.

"Trudy... Trudy Frances Sinclair."

Finally! The Daddy!Colby series has an official Daddy!David! (Okay, so he was already Dad #2 to Tyler, but still. This is David's own biological child.)

FWIW I think, if I haven't already, I'm going to make Tyler's middle name Franklin so they can both be kind of named after Fran - the woman who made their lives possible. I think they sound good: Tyler Franklin Granger and Trudy Frances Sinclair. Nice! I guess what we need to figure out now is what do they call her for short? Tru? Dy/Di/Dee? Hmm... Anyway, it's nice to have some movement on this series after so long a wait. Hopefully the new baby will pop up in future fic soon so we can see the whole family together.

/tries to ignore bunny showing the kids grown at graduation time/

I confess I find the fic's title really boring, but I felt compelled to hold onto the title Baby Girl for a Criminal Minds Morgan and Garcia fic. ;-)

Awwwwww, so sweet!!! I love Tyler drawing pictures of the baby, and then:

"My baby girl," he murmured in absolute awe.

omg I just teared up a little.

her yawns becoming ever more adorable as they grew wider and wider.

Sigh, and then the memory of his grandmother and passing on her name... LOVELY.

Sorry I didn't get to reply to this right when you posted but I did make a bunch of squeaking noises. I really love this series and I love how you ran through all of David's fears and hopes. Can't wait for more. :)
