Billy lucks out; there's a motel across the street from fugitive Dan Morton's ramshackle house. He can watch from his motel room unnoticed.

There's a dog out front that barks when anyone comes to the gate, but otherwise the place looks deserted.

It occurs to him that no one's been by to feed the dog in over 24 hours. He hopes the dog has food in the backyard.

That afternoon he tosses his leftover pizza in the yard. The black dog gobbles it up. He doesn't bark.

Billy peers through the backyard fence. There's a water bowl under a slowly dripping faucet but the food bowl is empty. He throws part of his roast beef sandwich to the poor pup who practically inhales it.

Billy pours a bag of dog food over the backyard fence. He pets the dog for a while, noting his frayed collar has a name tag on it: Cody.

At 11:30PM in the pouring rain a man in a dark hoodie goes through the front gate. Cody doesn't bark; he wags his tail.

Billy sneaks into the house, praying the dog won't give him away.

Cody's nails click on the bare floor as he comes to Billy, but all he does is lick his hand and lead him to Dan in the bedroom.

Dan's in cuffs in seconds, cursing the dog.

After the local PD takes Dan into custody Billy realizes Cody's nowhere to be seen. Damn officers must have left the gate open.

Back at his motel there's a noise at the door.

Cody gazes up at him from the threshold, soaked and filthy, looking hopeful.

Billy takes his new partner to the groomer and buys him a new collar, bowls and lots and lots of dog food.

Yay! Billy seems like a natural dog owner. The former owner deserves to have his dog sell him out.

Edited to add *former* owner.
