Closing up the house for the night, Billy sends Cody outside for one final bathroom break before bed. He resists, but finally goes outside with a disgruntled huff.

Billy checks everyone's water dish and has to move quickly before Tweety jumps off his perch and onto his finger. He keeps the door to the birdcage open all the time - working Fugitive Recovery means he feels weird caging his animals at all, even for vet visits. Tweety's only in there when he's sleeping since it's the only place Smokey won't disturb his rest trying to get him to come play.

Billy's been in bed a grand total of fifteen minutes before Cody whines to go out. Billy grumbles, but opens the bedroom door for him to go out through the kitchen dog door. Cody detours into the kitchen for a midnight snack adding three minutes onto Billy's wait time. Smokey uses the time to try to sneak onto Billy's pillow. She gets ejected - twice.

Passing fire trucks make Cody howl and Tweety flap his wings in distress. Smokey decides to make a try for the pillow again. Billy just glares at her and she gives up halfway there, sauntering away acting as if she'd never even tried, preserving her cat ego.

Billy wakes to Tweety leaving a present on his bed - a tiny striped snake dangling from his beak which he drops on the sheets.

Billy wakes for real this time. Cody and Smokey are curled up together in the dog bed and look up sleepily when Billy snaps on the light, frantic. Tweety blinks at him from the cage, looking entirely too innocent given his experience with pets.

Billy wags his finger at the bird.

"Don't you get any ideas."

That's priceless. Poor Billy outnumbered by his pets,

I kept meaning to comment on this series, but for some reason I never did.

I love this softer side of Billy you've got going on! It's so sweet and such a contrast. He's this tough FR specialist, who's not afraid to go all Dirty Harry on the bad guys, but the animals aren't afraid of him at all. In fact, they just bowl him over on their way into his life, one by one.

I agree with riverotter1951: priceless!

Thoroughly enjoyable series -- I love the way each pet brings in the subsequent pet to join the family -- does Billy keep the snake or does he draw a line?

Thank you for sharing.
