Title: Superstition is Just a Word in the Dictionary
Pairing/Characters: Dean, Sam
Rating: PG13
Spoilers: Pilot
Summary: Dean isn't really superstitious about dates like 11/11/11
Notes/Warnings: Read the disclaimer on my LJ

Dean didn't believe in superstition.

He'd looked it up in the dictionary years ago and huffed at it describing it as an 'irrational or unjustified belief in supernatural causation'.

As far as he was concerned all his beliefs in the supernatural were well justified.

Still, whenever an unusual date came up on the calender he found himself uneasy, on edge, as if some evil thing might decide this is its favorite holiday and wreak havoc.

If Sam noticed a correlation between the calendar and Dean's crankiness he never said, but once the tenth faded into darkness, Dean's shoulders tensed and he refused to let his guard down even if they hadn't had a fresh case for three days.

As Sam slept that night, Dean held a silent vigil, pretending to be asleep when Sam woke. Calling it a research day, they paid for another night in the same motel and Dean sent Sam to the local library to scout out local occult lore. He caught forty winks while his brother was gone and felt guilty about it afterwards.

The night of the eleventh broke just after Sam came back with takeout Chinese, swearing the librarian said it was the best eats in town. Dean tried to make a crack about taking restaurant advice from a bookworm, but it fell flat. Sam asked him if everything was okay and he waved him off with a 'fine, fine' and dove into what ended up being some pretty decent kung pao.

Midnight, and the turning of the clock to the twelfth, should have brought relief, but to Dean is was still 11/11/11 somewhere and until it was entirely gone he wasn't sure it was truly over without incident.

Out of morbid curiosity he took his laptop in front of the TV to surreptitiously look up what might have happened in history, first on that date in 1911 and then 1811 and then for fun - Winchester style fun, if there was such a thing - he checked out June 6th, 1966.

A little after three Sam nudged him awake to tell him to go to bed before he dropped the laptop. Dean hadn't even realized he'd been so bored by the lack of supernatural activity reported online he'd nodded off in front of yet another infomercial.

Shutting the laptop down, he staggered over to the closest bed and face planted into the pillow. It was past the eleventh in even California now and evil wasn't likely to pick Hawaii for an apocalypse. He could rest, for now.

One more down and somehow 12/12/12 didn't seem anywhere near as ominous for next year.

Cute. I don't see how Dean can not be superstitious.

haha. I love that he was all "not superstitious" and then disappointed when he couldn't find much about supernatural occurrences on the dates in question. Love it. Well done. :)

I'm sure Dean's quietly superstitious about a lot of things.
