The evening had passed into night when Peter looked up from the pool of light on his desk to find one of his team members hovering at his open doorway looking tentative.

"Peter, do you have a minute?"

Clinton looked serious so Peter sat up in his chair, beckoning him in.

"Sure, what have you got?"

"Do you remember the forged promissory notes that were cashed in at Manhattan Mutual Bank about six years back?"

"Of course," Peter said. "We could never close that case because all the notes had mysteriously disappeared before we could analyze them. The thief got away with half a million and we had zip for leads."

"Until now, only we're still screwed for the case." He passed over a document for Peter to look at. "The employee who hid them just used them as a bargaining chip for a reduced sentence in an embezzlement case. They said they were paid to make them disappear."

"So we have evidence," Peter mused. "Why do you think the case is ruined?"

"Because we gave the forger immunity already." Clinton pointed to one of the corners. "Look."

Peter huffed out a laugh.

"Neal never could resist signing his work!"
