The muzak had always been bad in the Bureau's elevators, but Megan froze up when she recognized a horrid instrumental version of Elton John's Rocket Man.
The sound of the song and the echo of the lyrics playing back along with the original version inside her head left a sinking feeling in her stomach, one of wistful longing.
Larry had been gone over three months, three months in which Charlie couldn't help repeating the statistics for astronaut life expectancy, as if in seeking release from guilt he'd completely missed that his concerns were creating a fear to match his own.
What if Larry didn't make it back from space? What if she never got a chance to tell him how she really felt?
She saw reminders of him everywhere: the glass jug of cream by her lonely diner coffee, the milky white of mashed potatoes, even cauliflower.
She thought of hours spent alone looking up through a borrowed telescope pretending she could see him.
The elevator door opened and she had to pull herself together before she ran into someone from her team.
Maybe she'd take an early lunch to avoid them.
Maybe she'd order a turkey on white bread.
