263. Tongue

"Um, Val?"

"Yes, Charlie?"

Val Eng stood in front of him, all long flowing hair and sweet smile. He'd practiced the words over and over in the mirror. 'Will you go to prom with me?' They rested on the tip of his tongue, but went no further.

"Is something wrong?"

Charlie finally shook his head, rendered mute by fear of rejection.

"If you're not feeling well I can go get Don."

Mortified and sure all was lost, Charlie waved her concerns away and fled.

Don ended up taking Val to the prom and Charlie was left home wondering what if.

252. Stutter

It was easier to avoid dances in college, but awards banquets still required a date if one was to look normal.

Only fourteen year old boys don't bring twenty year old women as their escorts.

Charlie's mother volunteered, but few things would brand him a loser at Princeton faster than bringing his mom as his date.

He finally decided to ask Sharlene Marcelo. She was advanced a few years and was only seventeen.

He stuttered, but managed to get the words out. "Will you go to the awards banquet with me?"

She did go, but with her girlfriend, not Charlie.

156. Anxiety

It didn't matter that he had a doctorate to his name, Susan Berry was incredibly unlikely to go out with him.

His palms were sweaty as he fought for something to say when she finally arrived at the party.

Anxiety and rejection be damned, he was asking her out tonight.

When she did show up she'd clearly been crying so he automatically pulled her aside into a quiet room and held her close while she tearfully told him about her friend getting into a car accident.

He never really asked her out, but they were a couple a month later.

275. Blush

Whispering the punch line was always the best part and it did indeed make Amita blush, her golden hued cheeks turning a visible shade of pink.

He just chuckled at her astonishment and slid behind his desk, propping his feet up on the corner carelessly.

"Still think I'm a choir boy?" he teased.

"Hardly." She looked more amused now than shocked.

"Good," he said, visually appraising her. "So how about dinner? Tonight? At eight?" As Amita silently gaped, Charlie just continued, smirking. "I won't take no for an answer."

Amita's smile was genuine and very attractive.

"Well, then... Yes."

Oh, Charlie. Poor thing.

I loved the progression of Charlie here... unable to ask, stuttering and nervous, not needing to ask, and then being confident enough to just tell Amita he's not taking no for an answer. Perfect. Love it.

I love Charlie's progression from the kid trying to get a prom date to the man who could tell a dirty joke to an ex student. I like this Charlie.

Amusing title. I like seeing Charlie as he matures and finally knows how to make his wishes known. Perfect as Amita says yes.
