"This seat taken?"

Neal looked up from his newspaper and morning coffee, stunned.

"Elizabeth? Where's Peter?" He threw down his newspaper, stood up rapidly and scanned the environment with frantic eyes. "You brought the bureau. They found me."

"No, silly. Sit down." Elizabeth tugged him ardently enough to get him to sit down again. "No FBI. Just Peter and I."

A bittersweet smile he couldn't force back stole over his handsome face. "Peter..." His gaze returned to the woman across from him. "I don't understand."

"You will," she said, patting his hand. "But I'll let Peter explain. It's his story."

As if on queue, Peter bounded across the street and up to the cafe. "Neal!"

"Peter!" The men embraced and Neal fought getting choked up at the reunion.

Elizabeth pulled over another chair to the tiny table.

"What's going on? Why am I not being brought in?"

"Because you're no longer a prisoner," Peter explained. "Remember how the parole board promised you an answer by 5:00PM?"

"Yes."

"They were all set to pronounce you a free man, but they ran a couple of minutes over."

"So?" Neal looked confused. "It shouldn't matter. I cut my anklet."

"At 5:01PM," Peter smirked. "The parole board decided to release you at 5:04PM, but backdated the decision to 5:00PM because that's when they had promised you an answer. So at 5:01PM you were technically a free man."

"So I didn't have to run?"

"It's probably good that you did," Elizabeth piped up. "Kramer still had it in for you. That took a couple of weeks to straighten out."

Peter smiled. "AKA early retirement."

Neal shook his head in disbelief. "But how did you find me?"

"For the third time?" Peter laughed. "When I set my sights on something, you know my aim is true."

Oh, yeah! I've been meaning to write this 5:01PM business since I saw the finale. It just begged for it!

Oh, I hadn't even thought about that! I was actually talking about Kramer's forced retirement. I went on the assumption that Neal wouldn't be pardoned (because there goes the premise of the show if he is). Forcing Kramer into retirement would solve at least part of the problem. It's just funny that you went there, too.

Ah, I see!

Well, I think even if Neal gets released he'll still stay and work with Peter, though they'll be able to go more places! /wants to imagine Peter and Neal in tuxes on an art retrieval mission in Monaco/
