Pairing/Characters: Charlie/Spencer, Jason
Rating: PG13

Notes/Warnings: Read the disclaimer on my LJ

"Hey, Spence."

Spencer tried to juggle the file folders in his lap so he could stand, but one ended up dumping its contents on the floor.

"Here, let me help you with that."

"No, it's okay..." Spencer tried to stop him, but Charlie went ahead and started picking up the papers from the floor. Spencer crouched down to join him, gathering papers as he apologized. "I'm sorry, I can be kind of a klutz at times." He accepted the stack of papers Charlie handed him. "Thanks," he said, a bit bashfully.

"You're welcome."

Charlie flashed him a wide smile and Spencer felt a flurry of nervous energy in his stomach.

It's just a psychosomatic reaction to unfamiliar emotional stimuli.

The thought didn't comfort him at all, nor did it make the butterflies in his stomach calm down.

As they both stood, Spencer watched Jason stride briskly in their direction.

"Dr. Eppes!"

"Agent Gideon."

"I know you only came here to brief us on your theories, but we could use your help a little longer if you have time. Care to show us how to use those theories on a case that just came in?"

"Sure," Charlie shrugged.

"Good," Jason started out of the room. "Reid will take you. The plane leaves in a half hour."

Charlie stared speechless at Jason's retreating form and then turned to Spencer with a quizzical expression on his face.

While the flight to Indiana had been fraught with tension as Aaron laid out the case for them, the return trip was relaxed, indolent.

Spencer had settled into a seat in the most remote corner of the plane's common area, furthest away from his teammates. Most of them were involved in a card game, which Charlie and JJ were watching. He couldn't decide if he'd chosen to sit there in order to avoid Charlie or in hopes of having some time alone with him.

He tried to pay attention to the papers in front of him, but he kept looking up each time he heard Charlie laugh. He and JJ seemed to be getting along famously and it was becoming harder to ignore the sharp spikes of jealousy each time she was on the receiving end of one of his bright smiles.

Flustered, he finally got up and moved to the seat across from his so that he was facing away from everyone else. He quickly found it was worse to hear Charlie's voice and only imagine what he and JJ might be doing.

It's just a heightened sense of awareness based on irrational thinking and hormonal imbalances.

"Hey, Spence."

Spencer jumped when he heard Charlie's voice right beside him.

"Mind if I join you?"

Unable to form a coherent phrase, Spencer merely gestured graciously to the seat he'd just vacated.

"Be my guest," he finally managed.

Charlie took a moment to settle into the roomy seat before fixing his eyes on Spencer.

"I like your plane."

It's not technically my plane...

Spencer ran through a short list of responses before settling on one he felt was safe and wouldn't make him sound like an idiot.

"I like it too." Emboldened by this small success, he went on. "I mean, I know we have it so we can respond with minimum delay to urgent cases anywhere in the country... Actually beyond, since we did consult on a case in Mexico recently."

"Mexico? Nice!" Charlie said, nodding his approval. "My family used to go down there on vacation every summer. My brother and I still make it across the border for a long weekend every once in a while. There's a hotel on the beach we like to go to. Hammocks and Coronas - that's Don's idea of rest and relaxation and it is pretty darn relaxing."

"Sounds wonderful," Spencer said, trying not to imagine Charlie shirtless and tan in swim trunks.

"It's great," Charlie agreed. "Did you get to spend any free time in the country while you were there?"

Spencer shrugged. "We had about two hours after the case wrapped up before we got the call to get back on the plane and head somewhere else."

Charlie frowned. "That's harsh. So is this how you guys live? Constantly packing and unpacking, always on the go?"

"Not exactly. We actually each keep a full suitcase on the plane at all times, so we never have to worry about going home first or forgetting anything. All we have to carry on are our case files and laptops in our normal everyday bags and briefcases."

"That's not what I meant," Charlie said, moving forward in his seat and leaning his elbows on his knees. Even though Spencer had drawn in his long legs to allow Charlie more room, he was now mere inches away and the proximity made Spencer breathe a little quicker. "I was thinking more about how hard it must be to have a life outside of work."

"What we do..." Spencer mused thoughtfully. "There are sacrifices. So yeah, it can be lonely."

"I understand."

Spencer looked at him for a moment. "I think you do," he said softly.

They held each other's gaze for a second, but were distracted by a loud eruption of laughter. Spencer turned around to see JJ in a fit of giggles as Derek tickled her unmercifully. Once the playful noises died down, Spencer turned around to find Charlie's eyes were on him, not on JJ.

"Morgan likes to torment JJ," Spencer explained. "Once he found out she was super ticklish, it became his way to get her to do whatever he wants."

"Oh really?" Charlie sounded polite, but uninterested.

"You know, it seemed like you and JJ were getting along really well earlier," Spencer ventured, trying to sound casual.

Charlie glanced at her briefly. "She's a nice girl." He shifted his gaze back to Spencer. "She reminds me of someone my brother used to date. He's got a thing for blonde women. He's seeing a brunette right now, so my father and I are convinced it's got to be serious."

"How about you? Do you have a type?" The words came out of Spencer's mouth before he could stop them.

Charlie shrugged slightly. "I'd say tall, but that's kind of moot, seeing as how just about everybody is taller than I am." He chuckled and leaned back in his seat. "It's kind of a cliché I guess, but tall, dark and handsome has always sounded good to me."

By the time Spencer recovered from the daze Charlie's answer left him in, Jason had come over and was shaking Charlie's hand in appreciation for his efforts.

Once Jason joined them, the conversation turned back to work and Spencer felt more in his element. He quickly forgot how nervous he was and easily lost himself in explanations of how the BAU's research was affecting how local and federal law enforcement handled serial crime.

"So rather than relying on statistical analysis alone, applying the behavioral models to the signature aspects creates a more realistic profile of the unsub, which sometimes goes against what the statistics tell us, but still is - as we've proven in the field - far more accurate."

Charlie, who'd been listening intently with a small smile on his face, turned to Jason. "Are you going to let your boy here diss my stats like that after all I've done over the last three days to help you?"

Jason grinned back at him. "You're a genius..." He rose and stepped into the aisle. "You take him on."

Charlie chuckled as Jason nodded and walked away.

"So, is that it?" he said to Spencer. "We go tete a tete? Your science versus my math?"

"Or we could just settle this with our fists, like men are supposed to," Spencer joshed.

Charlie roared with laughter. "Okay, that was a left hook I didn't see coming." He wagged his finger at Spencer. "Just when I think I've got you figured out, you come up with something out of left field that makes me have to rethink you."

Spencer flushed slightly.

"You're blushing!" Charlie marveled.

Spencer reddened further. "Just kill me now," he muttered under his breath.

"It's okay," Charlie assured him. "It's actually cute."

Cute not handsome...

Tall not dark...

They touched down in Virginia before Spencer knew it and together they managed to get Charlie's luggage back to Spencer's car. He'd been packed to go back to California so they'd merely swung by his hotel on the way to the airfield and picked all his bags up. Not sure what he'd need to take with him, Charlie had brought all of them and didn't want to leave any in Spencer's car while they were gone.

"So, um, am I dropping you off at the airport?" Spencer asked nervously once they'd gotten the luggage in the trunk along with Spencer's bag.

"Actually, the hotel if you wouldn't mind," Charlie replied. "It's too late for a cross country flight unless I take a red eye, which I'm not crazy about. Garcia arranged for a flight for me that leaves tomorrow and booked me a room for the night back at my original hotel."

"To the hotel then," Spencer said with a nod. He unlocked the passenger side door for Charlie and held it open for him. Charlie flashed an appreciative smile at him as he got in and Spencer's stomach fluttered in response.

God, he's got amazing lips...

Spencer held the door a bit longer than necessary, then quickly shut it when he saw Charlie start to reach for the handle himself.

He walked around to the driver's side, taking a few deep breaths to calm himself before he got behind the wheel.

The conversation during the drive was quiet yet comfortable, with Charlie asking about local landmarks as they passed them.

When they pulled up to the hotel, both of their doors were opened by valets and a porter came out with a trolley for the luggage.

"Um..." Spencer watched as the hotel staff swiftly and efficiently took over his car.

Charlie pressed a few bills into one of the valet's hands then beckoned to Spencer. "Come in with me for a few minutes," Charlie said casually. "Can't say a proper goodbye in a driveway, after all."

"Uh, sure." Spencer followed Charlie in, but stood a few steps behind him as he approached the front desk.

Charlie looked around to see where Spencer had disappeared to and motioned to him to come closer and join him standing at the counter.

The front desk clerk was bringing up Charlie's information on his computer. "Dr. Eppes... We show you as having a reservation for one night in a junior suite with one king size bed."

Spencer could swear the man looked up and glanced at the two of them fleetingly after mentioning the single bed in the room.

"You should show it listed at your government rate as well," Charlie added, either oblivious or nonplussed.

"We do, sir." The clerk handed over a small envelope and a form. "Sign here, please. Your room keys are in the envelope."

"Thank you." Charlie signed the form and pocketed the envelope after glancing at the room number on it.

"Thank you, Dr. Eppes. Enjoy your stay."

Charlie cocked his head towards the elevators and Spencer and the porter followed obediently.

Once they got to his suite, Charlie opened the door and let the porter go in first. He directed where he wanted the luggage placed and tipped the porter on his way out.

"So..." Charlie said, turning to Spencer and handing him a ticket. "I paid for your valet parking and tipped them already, so just give them this and they'll bring you your car."

"My bag..." Spencer happened to notice his bag on top of the stack of Charlie's luggage.

Charlie turned and followed his line of sight. "Oh! I'm sorry! I should have thought to tell them not to bring up everything in the trunk." He walked over and picked up the bag. He looked over at Spencer, grinning. "Good catch." He brought bag back and instead of handing it to Spencer, he put the strap over his head and across his body - the same way Spencer always carried his bag.

Charlie stood adjusting the strap to remove a twist in it making Spencer's heart beat a little faster at the proximity of their bodies.

"There. All set."

Charlie patted Spencer on the chest just over the strap and started to back away as Spencer suddenly blurted out, "I wish you didn't have to leave."

Charlie stopped moving away and stayed in that heady space mere inches from Spencer's lanky frame. "Really?" he asked. He searched Spencer's eyes, demanding without words that he not turn away from him, that he face him and show him what he'd been hiding.

When he finally got Spencer to relent and return his gaze, Charlie held it for just a moment before sliding his hands around Spencer's neck and pulling him down to kiss him.

Oh God, oh God, oh God...

In the first few seconds, Spencer was too stunned to do anything more than simply let Charlie kiss him, but once his long repressed desire finally kicked in, Spencer responded ardently. He wrapped his arms around Charlie and pulled him close, deepening the kiss, expressing with his entire body how much he'd wanted his from the very beginning.

Hungry to touch, Spencer let his hands roam freely over Charlie's back, then cupped the back of his head in one large hand, tangling his fingers in his soft curls as he drew him in tightly, not wanting the kiss to end.

When he felt Charlie begin to pull away, he released him reluctantly. He was breathing a little faster, but when Charlie smiled up at him, Spencer responded with an almost goofy happy grin, unable to hold back his glee.

Charlie stayed in the loose circle of Spencer's arms, resting his hands lightly on the taller man's chest. "I'm going to be back in town for a conference in a couple of weeks. I'd like to see you then."

"See me, as in socially?" Spencer asked, needing confirmation that this wasn't all a pleasant dream on the plane that he was going to wake up from at some point.

Charlie smiled reassuringly. "Yes, socially. The conference starts on a Monday, but I should be able to switch my flight from Sunday afternoon to Friday afternoon so we can spend some time together the weekend before." Charlie straightened Spencer's tie affectionately. "Does that sound good to you?"

"God, yes," Spencer answered, not missing a beat.

Charlie kissed him softly. "Then it's a date."

"Yeah." Spencer pulled him back in and kissed him again, this time without any of his previous nervous energy. The kiss was relaxed, intimate and full of promise. When they finally separated, Spencer rested his forehead against Charlie's for a breath or two before releasing him.

"So, I'll see you when you're back in town then."

Charlie's hand ran down his arm as Spencer pulled away until only their lightly joined fingers remained touching.

"We'll be in contact before then too, I'm sure."

Spencer reluctantly let their fingers break apart as he headed for the door.

"Sleep well and travel safely," he said, letting his care and concern show in his voice.

"See you soon."

With one last longing glance, Spencer reached for the door knob, fumbling slightly as he tried to open the door, grinning more at his distraction than any sense of embarrassment. He finally got through the door and closed it quietly behind him. He headed for the elevators and pressed the call button, bouncing on his heels as he waited.

"It's a date," he repeated to himself.

When the elevator arrived, he got in and pushed the button for the lobby. As the doors closed he was still buzzing with energy and excitement.

I've got a date...

asemic rocks.

I shouldn't have to say more, but I will. ;-)

She's the one who sucked me into the Charlie/Spencer love. Like Minds was conceived because she got me interested in the potential of this pairing. While it's easy to just say that it's putting two geniuses together, it's really more than that to me.

I like this pairing so much that I've made a series out of this fic. I have a number of fic planned so far, including a prequel that shows how the two of them met, called (of course) Meeting of the Minds. ;-) (I get a kick out of titles made out of plays on words, so expect more of that in the future, especially for the CM fandom.) I'm guessing that this series will have 7 or 8 fic in it and I might just leave it open ended so I can reuse it later if I want.

I haven't yet started writing any of the sequels or the prequel for Like Minds (just outlines so far), but I have embarked on a brand new CM series that I'm calling Five Nights. It will be seven fic long and be angsty gen. I've written the first fic in the series and would estimate that it will be published next week.

Very special thanks to beta iolsai for her assistance with this fic, especially because she always seems to make time for me, doing betas without complaint even when I give her less than an hour to do the job. Danke, meine gute Freundin.

Extra special thanks go out to melissima for helping me out in IM bit by bit with so many of my fic. She gets thanked as a beta when she does an official beta review of a fic, but I wanted to make sure I thank her for her frequent unofficial beta work and feedback as well. Merci, ma chère amie.

That was great! As much as like a good helping of smut/sex in fics the idea of Charlie takeing Spencer out on a date first is FANTASTIC, not to mention rather sweet.
I'm very much looking forward to the date.
Emma DeMarais: BlueEyeemmademarais on August 17th, 2006 02:26 am (UTC)

Well... I think *eventually* there will be dates and I do have a nice weekend trip planned for them when Spencer goes out to California to visit Charlie.

I don't want to give you any spoilers, but don't be too impatient for a formal date, okay? ;-) Hehehe

Glad you liked it. They are very sweet together.

Oh and smut/sex? Plenty of that to come. /evil grin/

fair_vatican on August 16th, 2006 12:58 pm (UTC)
it's so cute esp the last part.so cute.haha.

nice story, write more if u have time.your good!
Emma DeMarais: BlueEyeemmademarais on August 17th, 2006 02:43 am (UTC)
Time isn't my problem, sadly. I'm a slave to a muse who decides what and when I write. I'm grateful to have her, but she doesn't exactly perform on command. ;-)

Glad you enjoyed it. I hope there will be more soon myself.

Criminal Minds has only just stared where I am but I'm seriously enjoying it, so was rather intrigued to see your post.

I'm not sure if you were going for cute or not, but it was, very cute :) I see a lot of potential in this and look forward to reading more.
Emma DeMarais: BlueEyeemmademarais on August 17th, 2006 02:48 am (UTC)
Oh, definitely going for cute. Cute and sweet and adorable (or adorkable) /grins/ are what I get from these two.

Once asemic got me to see them together, the potential was easy to envision. I really think this will be a long series, one I might just want to keep open because it's enjoyable to write them together.

It might not be bad to one day start another, possibly angsty, Charlie/Spencer universe, but for now I intend to enjoy this one.

BTW, great icon! I wonder if penguingal has seen it yet. :-)

No one understanding doesn't make you an Artistslashybits on August 18th, 2006 02:41 pm (UTC)
Those two are definitely adorkable :)

I think they would be a very enjoyable pairing to write either cute or angsty, and both would rather work for them.

As for the icon, I can't remember if she's seen it or not. Probably should feedback her more often *g*

I'm rather surprised at how many people like the tiara wearing penguin as I made it as a bit of a personal joke from another fandom, but it is very cute anyway.
Emma DeMarais: BlueEyeemmademarais on August 22nd, 2006 12:01 am (UTC)
To me, penguins are like lions in a way - they get an unnatural share of attention out of all the animals in the world. Cuteness definitely works in their favor. I mean, there's no March of the Platypus movie out there, right? ;-)

penguingal always has good fic worth praising so yeah, try to use that icon next time.

I won't ask about the personal joke, but I admit to being curious.

magic and candy: *hearts*evilsimon on August 16th, 2006 09:10 pm (UTC)
*incoherent, dithering goo*

I adore Reid during this, and also the geniustension, and Reid's dorkiness, and dude, Charlie and the BAU. Absolute love.
Emma DeMarais: BlueEyeemmademarais on August 17th, 2006 03:18 am (UTC)
Goo! I love goo! Hee!

Charlie is the ideal FBI consultant to work with the BAU. They'd geek out on Bayesian filters alone for hours. ;-)

When I write the prequel, Meeting of the Minds, I'll have to include a geek sequence where they discuss the possible application of one of Charlie's equations. It'll be worth the extra work just to get them all geeking out at once. Hehehe

Glad you liked it.

rubynye on August 16th, 2006 10:49 pm (UTC)
I'm not sure what's sexier, the meeting of the minds or the meeting of the bodies!
Emma DeMarais: BlueEyeemmademarais on August 17th, 2006 03:19 am (UTC)
We'll find out for sure in the sequels! ;-)

Andrea: morgansilentflux on August 17th, 2006 02:01 am (UTC)
absolutely LOVED this! Charlie/Spencer, oh yeah! Can't wait till the next part! :D
Emma DeMarais: BlueEyeemmademarais on August 17th, 2006 03:27 am (UTC)
I can't wait either!

/glares at muse and taps foot impatiently/

I have outlines for two sequels, but so far no actual fic. /sigh/

For now, I can at least tell you I have another series coming next week called Five Nights. Hopefully that will keep people occupied while I try to bribe the muse with chocolate for more fic in the Like Minds series. ;-)

Tracycanetr on August 17th, 2006 04:26 am (UTC)
I do like Charlie and Spencer together. I especially like where Charlie has the savoir faire to tip the valet and ask for the government rate on the hotel. With all the traveling that Reid does, you would think it would be second nature for him but he is rather inept so maybe the other BAU team members do all that for him.

I am glad you are planning a series. I look forward to reading it.
Emma DeMarais: BlueEyeemmademarais on August 17th, 2006 08:13 pm (UTC)
I think because Spencer is a group traveler he's been sheltered from a lot of the experience Charlie would have since I'm sure he traveled solo a lot. (Plus Charlie is like seven years older. Spencer's barely over 21 by comparison, so Charlie I'm sure has vastly more life experience to draw on just from mere age.)

When they go out on a case I'm sure someone else arranges for transportation, hotels, meals, etc. He just has to show up, go where he's told with his group and focus all his attention on the case. All law enforcement at this level have support staff so I doubt anyone on the actual BAU team has to make any hotel reservations ever. The local law enforcement they're assisting probably help arrange food with their own support staff. When there are lives on the line and you've brought in the experts you really don't want them wasting a half hour running out to stand in line at Starbucks for a latte. ;-)

I'm glad this is a series too. I can't wait to write more of it and not just because it means your 'sex kitten' /snicker/ will get some play. Hehehe

I've been thinking for awhile that this is a perfect pairing - the have so much in common, and have different stregnths and weaknesses. Your story is terrific, and my favorite of the pairing. So far I've found 3. Continue this please, please, please.
Emma DeMarais: BlueEyeemmademarais on August 17th, 2006 08:18 pm (UTC)
Re: Charlie/Spencer
I plan to! Ever since asemic got me into this pairing it's kind of escalated to the point where it's one of my favorites. I reread Like Minds often back when it was still a partial fic merely because I enjoyed it so much myself.

Your story is terrific, and my favorite of the pairing. So far I've found 3.

There are *more*? Spill! Where? URLs would be ideal. ;-)

Re: Charlie/Spencer
Both stories are WIP's and are: Secrets by Reid's Girl found at www.fanfiction.net (you can search by title, author,or TV category and they have a fair amount of Criminal Minds stories; and Quantifiable by the tenth muse 1 found at Yahoo Groups The_Thenth_Muse1_fiction.You have to join her group, but her stories are well worth reading.Enjoy :)
Emma DeMarais: BlueEyeemmademarais on August 22nd, 2006 12:50 am (UTC)
Re: Charlie/Spencer
WIPs? Yay! Well at least mine is the first *finished* one. ;-) Hehehe

I'll check out the ff.net one, but I'm not willing to join a Yahoo group just to see if someone's fic is any good. They'd have to impress me *before* that (and impress me quite a bit) to get me to join a Yahoo group devoted to one single author. So if you're aware of any of her fic posted publicly, great. If not, I'll pass. Too much work for an uncertain payoff.

cat_willow (Jan)cat_willow on February 26th, 2007 03:25 am (UTC)
Yay! Being both a Numb3rs and a CM fan, the Charlie/Reid connection was obvious. This is actually the first story I've read, and it's very sweet. I hope it's a series!

Aww... Thank you. Once asemic turned me on to this pairing I adored it.

Then I started writing Charlie/Mohinder from Heroes. /dies from the pretty/

I just have *too* many pairings to pursue! Choices! Choices!

I do have quite a few fic planned in this series, but I think you can tell by the date they're not coming fast at all. /frowns/

But thank you for taking the time to read this old fic!

P.S. If you can bear some gen, Charlie and Reid will be reunited in the fic I'm going to publish this Sunday. It's called A Quick Game and it's in the A Quick Call Series. :-)
Reapantherrrrea on May 18th, 2008 03:05 pm (UTC)
Hey! What could I use to bribe your muse so she would make you write more of the delicious Charlie/Spencer pairing??
Ohhh the possibilities: Spencer that has gotten laid coming back to work, Spencer/Charlie p0rn, Spencer meeting the family
...or maybe
*looking nervously around*
*taking a calming breath*
*opening the door*
*and... putting a rabid bunny to the room with your muse*
*quickly closing the door*
*innocently walking away*

LOL... don't mind me I'm just a little bit crazy and a lot out of my mind after the 3 weeks of exams.
Emma DeMaraisemmademarais on May 18th, 2008 05:01 pm (UTC)

Well, oddly enough the muse quite often responds to simple requests like this, but lately I've been too swamped to write much of anything. (See how empty my LJ has been for the last month or two.)

I do have a long series planned out in this universe, but the second one (Tete a Tete) hasn't shown up yet in my brain so it's stalled.

I hope to get back to writing in June so I shall give this a poke and see if anything comes of it. Feel free to come back and poke me yourself if you'd like. Other than chocolate requests honestly are what gets her interested in projects. (Not like *I* have any real control over her. /grins/)

Thank you for taking the time to read this old fic. I appreciate your enthusiasm for it and hope I can revive the series for you. I just wrote new Five Nights after a year so anything can happen...

I rediscovered this fic tonight and realized that, for some reason, I didn't comment the first time I read it. So, just wanted to say now that I adore this. I love this pairing, possibly more than is really healthy, and you've written them both really well here. So cute!
