"Old hag," Charlie grumbled under his breath as he flopped down on the sofa.

Don looked up at him from over his beer bottle. "Not old Mrs. Dawlish again?"

"I swear," Charlie edged forward on his seat, tension radiating from his small frame. "No matter what I say, what I ask, she screeches at me until I leave her alone."

"What did you ask this time?"

"Just that she please have her gardener rake up the leaves that blew into our yard from hers."

Don rose. "You probably didn't ask nicely. I'll go ask her."

Charlie almost protested but let Don go. A mere minute later the sound of their new next door neighbor's raised voice made him smirk.
Don returned looking chagrined a few minutes later.

"Man," Don muttered. "She barely let me get a few words out before she started screaming at me."

Alan looked up from his newspaper.

"Clearly you two never learned the proper graces from your mother." He folded his paper and headed out. No noise could be heard outside, but Alan returned a good fifteen minutes later carrying a plate of cookies.

"Cookies?" Charlie was stunned. "She gave you cookies?"

"How? What?" Don stammered.

"I went over there and politely apologized for my sons' lack of manners and then I swept up all the leaves myself – from her lawn and ours. She was so pleased she thanked me and gave me a lemonade while I worked then cookies once I was done."

When Don reached for the plate, Alan pulled it away, putting it beside his own chair and taking a cookie for himself.

"She gave me cookies," he said, waving the cookie in his hand for emphasis. "You two need to learn to tip the hat to old-fashioned manners from time to time."
