Red and blue lights flashed, bathing the suburban home in crude color as Don's black SUV screeched to a halt next door to his family home. Racing past the tape line, he merely thrust his badge at anyone who dared try to halt his progress. He only skidded to a stop when the coroner's assistant barred his way, pulling a gurney from the house with a closed black body bag on it.

Through the open door he spied his brother, hunched over and curled in on himself as the LAPD detective in charge loomed over him, notebook in hand.

"Charlie!" Don charged up to him, ignoring the detective entirely. "What happened?"

"I heard a fight..." Charlie started tentatively. "Mr. Wysocki was yelling at his son Sean. And it sounded like..." Charlie's voice caught. "It sounded like he hit Sean, so I came over to check on him." As Don stared, Charlie shook his head as if in disbelief. "I punched him, Don. He had a good six inches on me, but when I saw him holding his belt like a weapon and Sean on the floor... The poor kid... He was all bloody... Mr. Wysocki? He told me to butt out. So I just decked him as hard as I could."

"But Charlie..." Don gestured to the coroner's van through the window. "The guy's dead."

Charlie's gaze turned to where Sean was sitting on the couch wrapped in a blanket, the long empty stare in his eyes proof he wasn't paying any notice to the uniforms on either side of him.

"I told Sean he didn't have to take it anymore. I guess he believed me." His gaze turned back to meet Don's, lost innocence shining in wide eyes. "I just didn't realize he knew where his father's gun was."

Good on Charlie for taking some action. I hope the kid gets a good lawyer and doesn't do time.

Yeeouch. Poor Kid. Poor Don. Poor Charlie!

You always do such a great job when you dig into a social issue in your fic. This is the very best kind of gut punch.

What she said.

I mean, literally, word for word what I wanted to say.
