"So, um..." Breaking in a new FBI agent was already a process that dearly tried Cal's patience, but this one Gillian could tell was about to send him through the door. Or the roof. It was too close to call.

"Yes?" Gillian prodded when the California blonde who'd introduced herself as Agent Mallory Pierce, 'but you can call me Val – everyone does because I totally am', appeared at a loss for words, looking back and forth between Cal and Gillian as Eli and Ria stood behind the agent also looking confused, but not bothering to hide it diplomatically as Gillian herself had done.

"I was just trying to figure out... I mean... You two are partners and it's not like you're actually in law enforcement..." Another glance between the two of them. "So, are you two like... A thing?"

"Oh! She wants to know if we're sleeping together!" Cal bounded out of his chair, seeming delighted to have enough ammunition to finally have some fun with the grown up Valley Girl the Bureau had sent them. "So tell her, luv," Cal gestured grandly to Gillian. "And don't skip the gory details. They're the best part and we don't want to disappoint our guest, now do we?"

Gillian took a steadying breath. "Cal and I are business partners and – when he's not making an ass of himself..." She paused to give him a glare, noting his gleeful grin and impish energy were unswayed by her admonishment, as always. "We're also friends. But no, we're not sleeping together."

"Absolutely not," Cal chimed in. He lowered his voice conspiratorially to Val. "She knows me too well; she won't have me."

"We work together. It just wouldn't make sense," Gillian clarified. She gestured behind Val. "Like it wouldn't make sense for Eli and Ria to sleep together."

Suddenly both Eli and Ria turned their attention elsewhere – Ria to the clipboard in her hands while Eli picked up a file and pretended to be looking in it.

"I should get back to the..." Eli muttered, hooking a thumb over his shoulder.

"Me too, nice to meet you," Ria added briskly, giving Val a little wave before they both all but bolted from the room.

Val watched them go and turned back to Cal and Gillian.

"Okay, even me – with my rep as a clueless valley girl – I could tell that that ship has sailed."

Gillian opened her mouth, but words didn't come at first.

"I really didn't think..." she stammered, still gazing at where they'd been standing, shaking her head in dismay. "She didn't strike me... And Eli?"

"Oh yeah," Cal added, smirking. "That ship has not only sailed, I'm selling front row tickets for the shipwreck to come."

I confess it's been a while since I watched the show and I never did finish the last season. As such, this fic kind of takes some liberties, mostly with time. Yes, I think Gillian has the possible cluelessness when it comes to those around her. *cough*husband*cough* I'm just not sure when/if she found out about Eli and Ria's liaison.

So to anyone who wants to argue the validity of this fic as far as show canon goes? Save your breath. I know it's not perfect. I don't care. It came out this way and this is the way it will remain.
