"I remember when we were a family."

The words come out of Nathan's mouth and as expected his mother takes them as an insult and his wife rushes to assure him there's no reason to use the past tense.

He makes no argument. Why should he? He was there for every moment after his father's passing. He watched his mother grow cold, distant, even more of an actress playing the role of Manhattan socialite than the undiscovered Broadway girls who'd kill for the part. He was there for the accident. He could feel his wife withdraw after her diagnosis, her focus on being seen as brave and independent. Even Peter, his rock, had been sacrificed for the almighty race for Congress.

He stares out the window, only able to think of Peter now. Peter: who'd always been honest. Peter: who'd only seen the best in him. Peter: who would never look at his big brother with that worshipful awe in his eyes ever again. That, more than anything, makes Nathan feel old, wrong, evil.

He hears the voices of his mother and wife behind him, but he's not listening. It doesn't matter anyway. He lied to them just now.

He can't remember a single time they felt like a family.

That's lovely! Thank you for sharing it. Really captures Nathan there. Lies that are truth that are lies, all rolled up together.

Oh, this is really good! Nathan cracking and then building up he walls again because he's desperate for the lost relationship with Peter, its all there in a few words. Peter held him together, as he did Peter. Thanks for sharing :)
