Numb3rs Fic: With New Eyes
Written for numb3rs100 Challenge #396 - Date

Title: With New Eyes
Pairing/Characters: Colby/Amita
Rating: PG13
Word Count: 300
Spoilers: Series
Summary: He never really saw her like that before
Notes/Warnings: Read the disclaimer on my LJ

He never thought of her that way, in fact it never occurred to him she even saw him as anything more than just a guy on Don's team.

So when Amita came back to California, newly divorced and lonely teaching at USC instead of Cal Sci, she looked up Colby and surprised the heck out of him by inviting him to dinner.

As friends, he'd confirmed.

As friends, of course, Amita had echoed, her laughter light and airy even over the phone.

A welcome home dinner turned into a regular thing as did Amita consulting with the FBI. They still phoned Charlie in England at times, but it was easier for him to work while they slept so real time contact was minimal enough that it wasn't awkward.

Amita assured him they'd split on good terms. They had been friends, then lovers, then spouses, then somehow wound up – with work and their mathematical passions getting between them – falling back into being just roommates and friends.

Yet when Colby showed up at Amita's apartment door one night noticing a guy a few doors down showing up at yet another door with flowers he felt a pang inside. He hadn't brought her anything.

From that moment on he looked at her differently. What were they doing that was so different from dating? They went out, walked arm in arm, ate intimate dinners together and yet never even kissed.

When Amita finally opened the door something washed over Colby as he saw her completely anew.

Acting completely on instinct, he stepped in, pulled her into his arms and kissed her.

Once he let her go he watched for her reaction with anxious anticipation.

She just smiled and opened the door wider for him to come in.

That night became their first real date.

Awww
I like how you use the guy a few doors down as a catalyst! And I like that she and Charlie parted on good terms. So much less awkward.

This is my favorite part:

Acting completely on instinct, he stepped in, pulled her into his arms and kissed her.

Once he let her go he watched for her reaction with anxious anticipation.

She just smiled and opened the door wider for him to come in.

Such an elegant transition in a series of three beats like a triplet! Now I want to try that. :D

Totally agree with Mel! I usually don't pay too much attention to this pairing but I really enjoyed this one; there wasn't anything about it that turned me off or away and it just... well... progressed really nicely :)

Very well done :)

That's absolutely gorgeous. I actually clapped my hands to my cheeks in emotion and delight during the last two lines. Now I have handprints...

So lovely, dear! Colby/Amita isn't a pairing I've seen too often, but you mad it work. I like how Mel put it, a series of triplets. It had that natural rhythm to it. Well done!

This is absolutely how I would picture their relationship happening.
