Colby was walking down the long hallway to Charlie's classroom when he noticed a crowd form near the open doorway – a flotsam of frantic students unable to enter or leave without flailing.

Then Larry appeared as he approached, equally shaken.

Next his cell phone chimed a text message with the special sound he assigned to Charlie's high tech alert system.

Ignoring it, he broke into a run, knowing what it meant.

He'd had this nightmare before. Only this time it was real.

Adrenaline infused fear flooding his system, he pushed past the stunned co-eds, not even bothering to flash his badge.

Once inside he shoved his way to the front of the concerned onlookers and came to a halt.

Charlie was splayed out on the floor, quaking, with Penny guarding him possessively. Even Larry had paused at the periphery, as if waiting for the dog's permission.

Colby's breath caught in his chest at the sight and struggled to keep his head about him when all he wanted to do was rush in and gather up Charlie in his arms.

With a few final seizure twitches, Charlie finally fell still and Colby found his feet – willing them to move forward even as Larry did the same.

"I was next door," Larry explained in a breathless whisper. "They came and got me."

Both men crouched down by Charlie's side, still allowing the dog ample room.

"Good girl, Penny," Colby praised, putting out a hand to pat her even as his eyes never left Charlie's supine form. Turning his attention fully to the man laid out before him, Colby took his hand as Larry checked his pulse at his neck.

"He is breathing adequately it seems," Larry said thoughtfully. "I must admit to some trepidation though. I am still not quite prepared to believe that these instances are, by and large, not harmful. I fear the paternal side of my nature keeps wanting to place a call for an ambulance."

"Believe me, I get it," Colby told him, hanging on tight to Charlie's limp hand. "Been there, done that, don't ever want to do it again." He leaned in close, brushing the damp curls from Charlie's forehead with his other hand. "Come on back now, Charlie, okay? Time to come back to us."

As if to join in the request, Penny shifted her position and started licking the side of Charlie's face.

"Um, students?" Larry announced, as if finally realizing they were still there. "Class is over. Please go and give Dr. Eppes some privacy as he recovers. Thank you," he added belated as they began to shuffle out.

The wait for Charlie to come around seemed interminable and Colby was about to reach for his cell phone to call for an ambulance anyway when he finally stirred.

The last of the students were filing out of the room as he started to come around, but Colby didn't care. He scooped up Charlie in his strong arms and shifted him so his back leaned against Colby's broad chest.

Arms around him, Colby waited for the waking professor to register where he was.

"Hey..." Charlie managed weakly, glancing around. "Don't have to guess what happened, do I?"

"Not really," Colby admitted. "How do you feel?"

"Just need a few..." Charlie waved a hand in lieu of finishing the sentence.

"Take your time," Larry soothed, laying a caring hand on Charlie's arm. "Everything's fine. Penny did her job. Class was almost over anyway..."

Charlie let out a groan. "Class... Crap." He tried to rise all of a sudden, but his weakness and Colby and Larry's combined efforts kept him from the too quick motion.

"They're fine. I sent them away," Larry explained. "Just rest. One of your TAs can email them later if needed."

Charlie just nodded and Colby felt him relax, putting more of his weight against him.

"Hey Larry, would you mind getting Charlie a glass of water?" Larry and Colby's eyes met and Larry nodded in understanding.

"I'll go down to the faculty kitchen and pick up a nice cool bottled water." He patted Charlie affectionately on the arm before he rose. "I'll be back shortly."

Once they were alone, Charlie turned his body into Colby's, curling up against his expansive chest.

"You okay?" Colby asked softly, his arms tightening around the small frame in his arms.

"I guess. I just hate this – this helplessness I feel whenever I have another seizure."

Colby pressed a kiss to Charlie's curls. "I know, but it won't always be like this. And hey, with Penny around you didn't get hurt falling or anything, right?"

"No, she takes good care of me, it's just..." Charlie turned again, this time burying his face in Colby's shirt. "I hate this," he repeated mournfully.

Colby pulled him in closer, focusing just on the feel of Charlie's warm breath against his skin through the open collar of his shirt.

They had to have sat there for a while because Colby caught Larry hovering by the still open door trying to get his attention. Once he did, Larry simply set the bottle of water he'd fetched just inside the door and then pulled it closed silently, leaving them with some privacy.

A chime from his cell phone drew his attention and Colby extricated a hand briefly to check it, just in case it was a worried Don.

It was, only it was clear he was already in the loop. 'Got alert. Talked to Lar. Said C okay w/u. Told Dad all well. Thx.'

"Don? Or my dad?" Charlie asked.

"Kind of both," Colby answered, putting the phone away. "Larry apparently called Don to let him know what was up and Don took care of your dad. No worries. We all just wanted to make sure you were okay." He gave Charlie a scrutinizing look. "Are you okay?"

"Yeah," Charlie admitted. "Just really tired. I always feel exhausted after one of these things."

"I should take you home then. I came for the findings on the fraud case, but..."

"The equations are done," Charlie assured him. "We can pick up the file from my office on the way home."

Colby looked around, mentally cataloging all the items he'd need to corral into Charlie's satchel before they left.

"Hopefully there's not too much to carry. I don't want you to have to walk on your own."

"I'm not on my own – not entirely." Charlie reached over to where Penny was waiting patiently and petted her fondly. "But yes, I probably could use a hand getting out to the car with all my stuff."

"No problem." As Colby prepared to rise, he felt Charlie tug him closer instead.

"Not just yet?" he pleaded. "I just want to stay here a little while longer."

Colby settled back down, bundling Charlie in his arms anew.

"Whatever you want."

Charlie lifted his face to him, his gaze both soft and adoring.

"A kiss? Could I ask for a kiss? I'd really like that about now."

Colby smiled, a rush of affection warming him as he leaned in to kiss Charlie deeply, feeling the relief replace the tension and worry as they both sank into the comfort of the other.

"Whatever I have to give? It's yours."

Confession
Yes, it's NOO!

I'm embarrassed to confess that I wrote this back in September at the same time as its predecessor, People to See. I guess I got tied up with school starting and never got around to publishing it. /hides/ Bad author, no biscuit.

So not abandoned, just very slow in updating...

Thanks,

Emma DeMarais

I've just read this entire series so far. I've managed to miss it before now, 'cause I tend to go more for the higher ratings and have to be in just the right mood for Colby/Charlie. But your latest update caught me in the right mood and I've caught myself up :).

This story mostly makes me say "awwww". Poor Charlie, suffering these lingering side effects, being so worried about the possibility of a seizure. Penny is certainly a help, giving everyone, especially Charlie, some extra confidence.

I loved the slow build between Charlie and Colby, partly necessitated by Charlie's condition and partly because they were both amusingly slow on the uptake :). I'm glad Charlie didn't let Colby avoid the conversation and I'm even happier that Alan, Don, Larry and David are all supportive. What about Amita, though? Will she return and will she accept this new turn of events, especially now they can't put all the blame on her for Charlie's seizures?

Laura.

I know I'm behind but
\o/
You know this series always makes me happy.

And poor Charlie. It's one thing not to be able to trust your body but for a man like Charlie to not be able to trust his brain must be just gut wrenching. But at least he's got Colby, and Penny by his side. :)
