Numb3rs Fic: Understanding Reality
Written for numb3rs100 August Monthly Theme – Vacation

Title: Understanding Reality
Pairing/Characters: Charlie
Rating: PG13
Word Count: 100
Spoilers: In Plain Sight
Summary: Charlie realizes he needs a break from his FBI consulting work
Notes/Warnings: Read the disclaimer on my LJ

"Moving on to the 10 Freeway, we show a fatal car fire blocking four lanes..."

Charlie glanced at his watch and drove forward another ten feet, finally coming even with the emergency vehicles.

The red and blue flashing lights advertised the car accident as crudely as Vegas neon.

He glanced, unable to stop himself, and caught sight of a charred corpse being removed from the burned out wreckage of a minivan.

Crime scene photos appeared in rewind in his mind's eye.

He'd told Don he understood the reality.

He was wrong.

This was real – too real.

"I need a vacation..."

Confession
A bit of trivia...

According to my records, this is the 50th drabble I've written for numb3rs100. I started back in November of 2005 with Prompt #32 and now the site is up to Prompt #69. Back then I had no idea I'd end up *running* the comm, but thanks to my wonderful co-maintainer melissima the comm continues to inspire me to write at least one fic a week for the fandom.

I confess I don't normally write visual/descriptive type fic.

I normally suck at it, but hope springs eternal.

Every time I try, I open myself to the possibility that I won't suck at it. So I keep trying.

This time it took eight totally different versions to get a drabble that worked and still kept at least a tiny bit of the imagery that was in the original version.

Each time I rewrote it it felt like I was moving more towards my normal style and away from the visual style that was the purpose of this experiment in the first place.

So this isn't the fic I envisioned.

But it'll do for now.

And now I've learned more that will hopefully make the next fic better.

FWIW, the 10 is the main freeway Charlie would take to get to the FBI offices on Wilshire. Depending on where he was coming from it wouldn't be the only freeway, but it's the main artery for him to head west so it's the most likely choice for this fic.

Thanks,

Emma DeMarais

I think you've done very well with it. Charlie is captured perfectly here. We've seen the way that cases have gotten to him, so it's logical that he would finally come to a breaking point.

Or something. I'm still waking up.

But I like it. I like Charlie when he's vulnerable.

Re: Confession
Well, thank you. When I look at this fic all I see are all the failed attempts. /sigh/

I'm not asemic so whenever I try and fail to write in anything resembling her visual style I just wonder why I should bother since I have my strengths and she has hers and never the twain shall meet.

Then I remember the point of writing so much is to try new things, to stretch myself, to *learn*. And then I try again...

I love Vulnerable!Charlie, but I also love Adult!Capable!Charlie too. There's a time and a place for both of them and this fic was about the latter suddenly turning into the former.

Thanks,

Emma

Yes, the freeways of LA are too horrible for his delicate disposition... /frowns/
