It was hard to walk two abreast. Jimmy's hand, holding Ernesto's, tightened as a man coming the other way – distracted by his beautiful female companion – knocked into his shoulder as they passed.

"Sorry," the man called after them.

"At least that one apologized," Jimmy grumbled.

"It's a narrow sidewalk," Ernesto soothed.

A minute later a bigger man, walking with two other men knocked against his shoulder so hard it almost pulled his hand from Ernesto's.

"Hey!" Jimmy protested.

"Look, boys. We found ourselves a couple of fags on a date."

The man's ugly twisted visage made Jimmy instantly regret drawing his attention.

"We don't want any trouble..." He doubled over as the big man punched him hard in the stomach.

"No!" Ernesto cried out, only to be restrained by the man's two companions.

"Shut up, fag!"

A second punch and Jimmy was down on the ground.

"Freeze! Nobody move!"

Jimmy looked up to see a vaguely familiar man holding a gun.

"This is none of your business," the big man spat out.

"This is my business." The armed man used his free hand to flash a badge. "FBI."

A second gun was cocked and Jimmy found it was held by a lovely woman. They were the couple who'd gone past and apologized: both armed and dead serious.

"Backup's on its way so I suggest you take your hands off these gentlemen and assume the position."

Later, as a paramedic bandaged Jimmy's split lip, the couple – Robin and Don as he'd learned – came to check on them one last time.

"Why risk yourselves?" Jimmy asked. "You don't even know us."

"Because it was the right thing to do," Don answered.

"Besides," Robin added, "your love is the same love as Don and I have and you have every right to it."

Go watch the video for the song that inspired this fic: Same Love by Macklemore. It's sweet and beautiful and so right and so wrong that we live in a world where not everyone gets to live happily ever after with the one they love.

And you don't have to be as brave as Don and Robin in fiction to stand up for equality in love in the real world, so why not do it? It's all the same love.

I may be your average heterosexual female slash author with nothing to gain from this, but in the words of the song, "Damn right I support it."

Share the song. Share the video. Share the sentiment.

Share the same love.

This is lovely.
Very nice work, Emma! I love the image of Don and Robin armed and serious in the face of the bashers. I wish more straight people would stand up for love in all its forms.
