Notes/Warnings: Read the disclaimer on my LJ

In the twilight haze that follows each LA smogset like a starlet's stalker, a solitary figure's shadow dissipates into darkness on the cliffs above the slow roiling Pacific.

He hasn't smoked since he was seventeen and stupid enough to bend to peer pressure. Exhaling a final cancer cloud, the toe of his inky black boot grinds out a half-smoked butt into the sparse summer dry grass. A bark of a cough erupts from protesting lungs.

It's bad, even for him, all that blood.

He thought he was inured to violent death, the cruelty mankind can do.

The dirty taste on his tongue suits his mood, echoes the disgust he feels for this inhuman killer. He stopped praying his first year in the Bureau, yet a faint hope rises unbidden that death claimed them quickly.

Three heads of still baby soft blond hair smeared with lost lifeblood...

A black-haired nanny who hid a blacker heart and a murder-suicide vendetta...

Don turns his back on the beauty before him, forcing himself to return to the crime scene.

These are the worst cases: no way to bring a dead killer to justice, no way to offer closure or peace to those left behind.

Very bleak and very beautifully written.
