Title: Five Nights – Jason
Series/Universe: Five Nights
Pairing/Characters: Jason
Rating: PG13
Spoilers: Blood Hungry, The Popular Kids
Summary: Jason's nightmare
Notes/Warnings: Read the disclaimer on my LJ

"I'm sorry to pull you away from your cabin, Agent Gideon." Detective Ellingham pulled his car into the driveway of a modest suburban house cordoned off with yellow crime scene tape. "It's just you were so close by and you had a connection to the victims."

"So you said." Jason got out of the car and followed the detective as he headed up the front walkway. "You couldn't find any ID, but you found my business card?"

"Yes. We think whoever did this took the husband's wallet and the woman's purse, or at least most of what was in the woman's purse. He apparently discarded some cosmetics, a few scrap pieces of paper like her grocery list and about a dozen business cards – yours included. Hopefully you'll recognize one or both of them." Detective Ellingham paused for a second and winced. "Well, what's left of them."

The detective nodded to the officer guarding the front door and they entered the house as the forensics team was leaving.

"They're in the family room in the back."

Detective Ellingham led him to the door then stopped just outside and gestured for Jason to enter.

"You're not coming in?"

The detective shook his head. "I've got a little boy and those two kids... How they were butchered... I just can't look at that again. I'm sorry."

"It's understandable," Jason said kindly. "Crimes against children are always the hardest to take."

Jason glanced around the room and saw four bodies covered with sheets – two of them small and obviously children.

Even with the bodies covered the crime scene was a gruesome sight. The soft beige walls were marred with arcs of darkened blood splatter and the deep wine color of the oriental rug was so close in shade, Jason had to crouch down and look closer to realize just how much of it was soaked in blood. Bits of what he guessed might be brain matter were scattered over the rug and he fought down the bile that rose into his throat.

"They had just moved in. The place is mostly filled with boxes." Detective Ellingham stood at the doorway with his face turned away as he spoke. "Two kids, a boy and a girl, so new they weren't even enrolled in school here yet."

Jason approached the nearest body and pulled back the sheet. A flutter of nerves rose in his stomach as he realized the man's badly mutilated face looked slightly familiar to him.

Detective Ellingham's cell phone rang and he answered it while Jason looked at both the children, his apprehension growing as he tried to place the faces of the family in his memory.

"Agent Gideon! Forensics got a hit on some prints they lifted. Ends up they match a guy you put away over a decade ago for abducting a thirteen year old girl. Evidently he just got out of prison - some kind of early release thing."

Jason felt his stomach drop as the realization hit him. "It can't be..." he whispered. "It can't." He pulled back the final sheet and stared in shock at the face of the woman beneath as his memory slammed back into place.

"The girl's name was Addison. Deborah Louise Addison."

"No... No..." Jason ripped the sheets back on the husband and kids, looking at their faces again. "Deborah, Tim, Amber, Keith... This can't be happening."

Detective Ellingham's cell phone rang again. "It's for you," he said, holding it out to Jason.

Dazed, Jason took the phone, turning away from the horror of the bodies. "Gideon."

"Hello Agent Gideon."

Jason froze, his breath choked off in his chest.

"Who is this?" he finally managed.

"What's the matter? Didn't you recognize me? My family? Have you totally forgotten about us?"

"Deborah?" he whispered fearfully.

"I'm surprised you recognize my voice after all this time. You gave our picture away, you stopped thinking about us..."

"No! I didn't!"

"We moved into your area and you didn't even know. The man who abducted me got released from prison and you didn't bother to inform us ahead of time. He hunted us down and murdered my family and you didn't even realize it was us."

"How can this be? This can't be happening." Jason turned around to look at the bodies again.

"It is. And guess what? Now that he's done with my family he's going after yours."

"Apparently we're not the only people you've abandoned, neglected. Tell me Agent Gideon, how long has it been since you saw your son Steven?"

Jason bolted upright in bed, sweating and gasping.

He fumbled with the light on the nightstand, snapping it on and grabbing his cell phone.

Hands shaking, he dialed his son's number.

"Steven? It's your dad. I know it's late, I'm sorry I woke you. I just needed to know you were okay."

Jason looked at his wallet on the nightstand. He opened it up and looked in the slot where Deborah's family's picture used to be. All that was there was a business card for a dry cleaners.

"Everything's fine. Just go back to sleep and we'll talk this weekend. Good night."

Jason closed the cell phone and sat on the edge of his bed, staring at his wallet.

He was still sitting there an hour later when the sun rose.

I was stuck on this series for a while, but the floodgates have opened!

I wrote both Jason and Aaron's chapters in about a day and just did Derek's last night. I'll try to get them all posted this week.

Hopefully Elle's and Reid's will come fairly quickly. The epilogue/final chapter should be a lot easier to write than all these scary nightmares.

Very special thanks to beta iolsai for her assistance with this fic.

That was Good really a really intresting look into Jason's mind.
I'm really looking forward to the other fics.

Thank you. Aaron's is up now and I should be able to get Derek's posted before the Season Premiere on Wednesday.

I was hoping to get more CM fic done over the summer, but I'm just glad I started finally *publishing* it!

Aww poor Gideon... I think he needs a hug.
Awesome Writing, I can't wait to read the rest! ^_^
Emma DeMarais: BlueEyeemmademarais on September 19th, 2006 09:17 am (UTC)
Oh, definitely. They'll all need hugs when I'm done with them. Bwhahahaha! ;-)

Aaron's is up now. Derek's should be up on Wednesday.

No promises on Elle's or Spencer's. I might get side tracked by Fisher King plot bunnies...

Ha, finally! But it was worth the wait. Gideon seems to take some cases so personal that it's only natural his nightmare would include that somehow. And isn't every parent's nightmare that s/he can't protect or be there for her/his children? Nicely done.

Yeah, sorry for the delay. /glares at muse/

When I read this yesterday I was thinking 'oh wait until she read Aaron's!'

Of course now you have so I can't taunt you over it. /snaps fingers in disappointment/ That's what I get for focusing on fic polishing instead of replying to my comments. Hehehe

Jason's estrangement from his son made it an even stronger target when accusing him of neglect. He's not the only parent but having the oldest kid gives him a lot of extra baggage about his past someone like Aaron doesn't have yet.

Glad you liked it.

Derek's is coming on Wednesday and FWIW, it's my favorite of the series so far. Wait until you see what I put him through. /evil grin/

Naturally Gideon would have years of could-have-done and should-have-done in his past with his son - times when he's been working instead of being there for him, times when he broke promises. Hotch knows it might be he won't have enough time for his family, but he still thinks he can manage. Gideon is disillusioned where Hotch is still hopeful and confident.

And I can't wait for Morgan's dream.

I think some of Aaron's hope and confidence might be starting to erode. Having to leave on his birthday in Machismo and the events of Fisher King Part 1 have to have had an effect on him.

BTW, Derek's is up now. :-)

seraphina_snapeseraphina_snape on September 20th, 2006 09:55 am (UTC)
I still haven't seen Fisher King Pt.1 - I was holding out for part two. And since that's on tonight, I'll get a download link tomorrow or Friday, and then I'll watch them both together. But... yeah.

Heading over to Morgan's dream now.

Before I forget, can you tell me what episode and/or scene that Garcia image is from? I love the fact people even have Garcia icons. She's awesome. :-)
seraphina_snapeseraphina_snape on September 20th, 2006 09:06 pm (UTC)
I'm not really sure. I think it might be from The Popular Kids, but it could be another episode altogether. I can go check and tell you tomorrow if I can find the cap I made it from.

And of course people have Garcia icons. She's great, and we worship her (well, I do).

Oh, it's not a big deal. Don't bother. I was just mildly curious and figured it wouldn't hurt to ask.

I'm all for Garcia! I've been transcribing scenes of hers for my own evil (fic) purposes /grins/ and to post on the comm, but it points out to me just how little screen time she gets. No wonder she's not a regular - she's barely on. Still, she makes a great recurring since she packs so much personality into her brief appearances. It's almost better to have her in small doses so we never get enough of her. Hee!

All hail girl geeks!

seraphina_snapeseraphina_snape on September 21st, 2006 05:52 am (UTC)
I thought wrong; it's actually from Machismo.

Garcia has more personality than some lead charcters in other shows. So what if she's not a regular? She's still a brilliant character. And it's something to look forward to each episode. I know *I* am always waiting for the Garcia scenes.

I don't want to spoil anything, but I can tell you that if you're a Garcia fan then Fisher King Part 2 will make you very happy. :-)

Really? That's good. The download finished about 30 seconds ago. It's about half past midnight, though, so I'll watch it tomorrow. I'm tired.

Just as an FYI (no spoilers)...

The one thing to be prepared for is that while the first hour goes pretty slowly the second hour kind of rushes things towards the end to resolve them.

That inconsistent timing is the thing that made me enjoy it a bit less, so if you're prepared for it it might not affect you.

Very good - I loved the way you used Gideon's role as father - both in reality and metaphorically.
Emma DeMarais: BlueEyeemmademarais on September 19th, 2006 08:02 pm (UTC)
I was rewatching What Fresh Hell recently which begins and ends with Jason bookends. Garcia asks him at the beginning if the table full of framed pictures is his family. He tells her 'yeah, sort of' and at the end he puts a framed photo of the girl they saved among them.

This fic implies that his work 'family' is more important than his real one and that Jason doesn't take as good care of that family as he thinks he does - a double failure.

Yeah, I'm cruel and heartless. Maybe they should profile *me*! Bwahahahaha! ;-)

Wow! I knew these were going to be interesting when you described the fics, but this was so great! I loved the look into Jason, how disturbing and almost real the dream was... very vivid. *runs off to read Aaron's*
Emma DeMarais: BlueEyeemmademarais on September 19th, 2006 08:14 pm (UTC)
Thank you.

Even though I knew that I'd been pretty up front about each of these fic being nightmares, I wanted to write - at least the beginning of each - as if it was a scene that could have happened in real life. At least that way the dreamers might be lulled into a false sense of security. Like dreamers though, they don't question some of the things that happen - especially Aaron and the media circus that wasn't there when he was just outside but now is going full bore. In Jason's case he gets a phone call from a dead woman and while he exhibits a normal amount of disbelief, he never says to himself 'I'm dreaming'.

Anyway, the most disturbing dreams have a healthy amount of reality in them. It's what makes them hit more close to home.

Awww, poor fellow! The really bad part is the only reason the pic's no longer there is he gave it to Reid, as a sort of talisman.

This was a good idea. It reminds me of how Frank tormented Jason by killing off the victims that the BAU ended up saving.
