Numb3rs Fic: God is a Bullet
Written for numb3rs100 Challenge #73 – Bullet, September Monthly Theme – Guns

Title: God is a Bullet
Pairing/Characters: Don/Robin
Rating: R
Word Count: 300
Spoilers: Guns and Roses
Summary: Don goes to Robin's house late at night after a shoot out goes bad
Notes/Warnings: Read the disclaimer on my LJ

It was easy.

He knew she wouldn't turn him away even if he showed up at 2AM, edgy and desperate.

No talk, no explanations... Just stairs, bedroom, strip.

She offers sweet respite and he needs to lose himself in the haven of her body.

He slides inside, closes his eyes...

The gunman fires, takes down a SWAT officer with a shot to the leg.

Don's eyes fly open and he falters, stills.

Robin whispers her concern, but he silences her with a kiss. The lingering traces of Merlot inside her wine stained lips help chase the invading images away.

It doesn't last.

His rifle runs out of ammunition so he slides his semi-automatic out of his thigh holster.

His hands tense, flex, feel empty even though they're filled with warm skin.

He slides out slowly...

David's exposed, he's in the line of fire. Don has to act fast. He fires. He misses.

Slow isn't working so he plunges into her warmth with fervor, oblivious to her startled reaction.

The gunman fires at Don and he points his gun at the man.

The rush of her breath in his ear... The rush of adrenaline in his system... She's saying something, but he can't hear her...

He pulls the trigger and a bullet flies through the air. It hits the center of the man's forehead just as Don's chest explodes in pain.

Don pulls out gasping, his hand rubbing the bruise where his vest stopped the bullet from penetrating his heart.

"I... I can't." He apologizes, grabs his clothes as she stammers incoherently and runs down the stairs.

He's in his car a minute later, driving away fast with the windows down, gulping in air like he can't get enough in his lungs.

He killed a man today.

It was easy.

In case you already didn't recognize it, the title of this fic comes from the Concrete Blonde song of the same name.

A little chuckle for those of you on my f-list who I know are Fall Out Boy fans... When I googled "sing365 God is a Bullet" (because sing365.com one of the few lyric sites that doesn't give me viruses) the second link that comes up is for Fall Out Boy's 'Sugar, We're Goin Down'. It's for obvious reasons, but I'll post an excerpt for those who don't know the song for fun and because fair use is important. ;-)

I'll be your number one with a bullet
A loaded God complex, cock it and pull it

One of the better lines in popular music as of late. ;-)

And here's an excerpt from Concrete Blonde's song because Johnette Napolitano, well, you just have to hear this song to understand.

Shoot straight, from the hip, yeah
Gone forever in a trigger slip
Well, it could have been, it could have been your brother
Shoot straight, shoot to kill, yeah
Blame each other, well blame yourselves, you know
God is a bullet have mercy on us everyone

Although these are the lines that went through my head that made me write the fic.

They're gonna call me Sir, they'll all stop picking on me
Well I'm a high school grad, I'm over 5 foot 3
I'll get a badge and a gun and I'll join the P.D.

He didn't have to use the gun they put in his hand
But when the guy came at him, well he panicked and ran
And it's thirty long years before they give him another chance

I've had the song in my head for over a week now. I hope finally publishing this will make it stop. I love it, but it's not imagery I want to live with every day.

Very special thanks to betas melissima and iolsai for their assistance with this fic.

I couldn't help but make the compairisons to Don's cocking a gun and firing and then misfiring during sex.
Strange how that happens.
Johnette Napolitano... very nice! For a minute there I thought you were referring to Arizona Governor Janet Napolitano. Strange again.
I know... I'm up late. Insomnia has hit tonight and I need an Emma fix. Thanks for being.

I couldn't help but make the comparisons to Don's cocking a gun and firing and then misfiring during sex.

You know, I kept trying to write that misfiring into the fic - trying to show them out of sync, out of rhythm, lacking flow.

I finally gave up since I really couldn't articulate it the way I imagined it. This is a nice way of putting it though.

I didn't know about Janet. Weirdness...

Thanks for giving me me feedback fix. :-)

He killed a man today.

It was easy.

SNAP! I love this so much. I love that Don has a total freakout not because he killed somebody and has all this remorse and ickiness but because he killed somebody and it was nothing and he's so terrified of losing that grip on his humanity. *psych-induced guh*

*shakes head* Whoa, did I go analytical!NV? I'm not supposed to do that... it's late/early... need sleep.

Bravo Brava!

You nailed it, right there.

And I like analytical!NV. Keep on bringing her back out. Show off your smarts, girl! No sense keeping what you've got locked up in your head. ;-)

Whoa. That was good.
I suppose Don would have some *ahem* problems after a day like that.

There's a whole school of film studies that looks at the way violence in film/TV is a standin for sex. Just thought I'd throw that out into the mix.

Yay! First I get analytical!NV (see above) and now I get analytical!telligirl! /is all happy/

I've never gotten into film studies, but I have a whole shelf of books on Hitchcock since he's my absolute favorite director of all time.

Sex and violence are both a form of release. Both involve pent up tension that is dissipated by the act, so I can see how the stand-in theories might work.

The issue gets clouded by the whole rape is about power discussion, but I am intrigued by the idea of the impact of violence in the media being a substitute since it makes me wonder what people used as a substitute prior to TV being so violent and prior to TV.

Thanks for the thought provoking commentary.
