Heroes Fic: And the Bottom Drops Out
Posted to heroes_fic

Title: And the Bottom Drops Out
Pairing/Characters: Nathan
Rating: PG13
Spoilers: Pilot
Summary: At the hospital Nathan finally has time to think about what happened
Notes/Warnings: Read the disclaimer on my LJ

Shit.

Shit.

Oh God...

Now that he wasn't rushing around worrying about Peter, the reality – if that word could even be used for such a surreal situation – finally hit Nathan. The moon had blocked the sun and the earth had stopped spinning on its axis, at least for him. Feeling lightheaded from the shock, he stumbled over to a chair, collapsing in it as the last of whatever reserves he'd been running on dissipated.

This is not happening.

This can't be real. It can't be.

I... I flew...

Head spinning, Nathan leaned back bonelessly against the hard plastic chair. He closed his eyes and rested his head against the wall, hoping the world would be right again – normal again – if he could just carve the memory from his brain where it was growing like a cancer, ready to take his life, take away all that he'd worked so hard to achieve.

It didn't happen... It didn't happen...

"Sir? Are you all right?"

Nathan's eyes flashed open only to be blasted by the glare from the harsh fluorescent lights overhead. Wincing, he saw a nurse in brightly colored scrubs hovering over him.

"Huh?"

"You look pale, sir. Do you need a doctor?"

"No, no, I..." Nathan stammered. "My brother... My brother's here."

The nurse nodded, her expression patient and understanding.

"Can I get you some water?"

"No, but thank you... Thank you," he repeated, finally managing a weak smile that reassured her enough that she went on her way down the hall.

Pull yourself together, man!

He took a deep breath and straightened up in his seat.

I'm Nathan Petrelli and I'm running for Congress.
I'm Nathan Petrelli and I'm running for Congress.
I'm Nathan Petrelli and I'm running for Congress.

Feeling stronger, Nathan stood and looked around for signs for the hospital cafeteria.

He strode purposefully through the halls until he spotted a gift store with a small coffee bar inside. He stood in line and ordered a coffee, trying desperately to think about his campaign but realizing he could recall nothing about what he had originally planned for this day.

As he picked up his cup, a woman stopped him with a polite tap on the arm. She smiled bashfully at him, looking a little uncomfortable at speaking to a stranger.

"Excuse me. It's just... You look really familiar and I was trying to figure out where I might have seen you before."

Automatically, the words started to come.

"I'm Nathan Petrelli and..." Nathan stopped short, inexplicably unable to continue. He'd said the same words hundreds of times a day, every day of the campaign. The woman looked expectantly at him. "And my brother is here in the hospital," he finally blurted out. "Please excuse me."

Panicked, he rushed off, feeling his heart pounding in his chest and his pulse pounding in his temples as if his head was ready to explode. Somehow he retraced his steps without thinking and wound up back where he'd been sitting, back to Peter.

Tossing the coffee untouched in the trash, he slumped into the chair again and covered his face with his hands in despair, his breath coming in great heaving gasps.

I'm Nathan Petrelli.
I'm Nathan Petrelli.
I'm Nathan Petrelli.

And I can fly.

Confession
I got blindsided less than 24 hours ago.

I had Tivoed Heroes, but not watched it. Later in the evening a friend IMed me raving about it and telling me I had to watch it. Since I was up late I turned it on about 2AM, figuring I'd watch it to get sleepy.

Hardly.

I was pretty much riveted, despite the late hour.

And the end?

Nathan! /dies/

Evidently my long hidden affection for Adrian Pasdar finally comes out into the light. ;-)

I'm sold. I wasn't looking to make a new comm, seeing as how even being co-mod at numb3rs100 takes up a noticeable amount of my free time, but I just couldn't hold myself back. I created a flash fic comm for Heroes after a search turned up no fic comms at all.

I should have known not to trust the search.

I got the comm all set up only to find someone had already made one, but with an underscore in the name. (Can I just say how much I despise underscores in usernames?)

Since I'm not down with comms who refuse to let you post your own fic on your own LJ, I eschewed the other flash fic comm and joined a regular fic one. Sadly, there's two of them too, one with an underscore. (I'd have taken the non-underscore one if all things were equal, but the underscore comm has more people in it.)

I'm trying not to let this unfortunate situation with the comms dampen my enthusiasm. I'm sure a new episode next week will perk me right back up. /grins/

I hope to have more Heroes fic in the near future, now that I've officially added the fandom to my list.

FWIW, the title of this fic comes from a song called Better Days (And the Bottom Drops Out) by Citizen King.

One last confession...

I confess that sometimes I post fic on specific days in order to make symmetrical patterns on my LJ calendar. This post makes a nice H out of this month's posts. If you don't believe me, go check out July in my archive. ;-)

Thanks,

Emma DeMarais

Hee hee hee! That is so you. :)

Sorry about the hyphen debacle. I HATE searching lj.

I like your Nathan. It's as if he'd like to be an asshole, but he just can't manage it around his concern for Peter. AWWWWWWWWW! I hope canon!Nathan turns out like that. I'm tellin' you, man, you should be writing these shows.

"Nathan..." Peter's voice pierced through the choir of campaign speeches that echoed in his head, and he rushed to his brother's bed.

"I'm here." He grasped a feeble hand.

"Nate, we were flying."

He pressed the other hand to his brother's head. "You're being delusional. You fell, and you're -- "

"We flew. You... you..."

He stroked his fingers along his brother's jaw. "Pete, nothing happened. You're hallucinating, and I think you need -- "

"Nathan..." Peter weakly pulled the oxygen mask from his face. "We were flying."

Nathan guided his brother's hand, wrapped around the mask, back to Peter's face. "Pete, you can't say anything about this, okay? You can't -- "

"We were flying," the younger Petrelli murmured, his hand wrapping around his brother's wrist to pull back the oxygen mask. "We flew."

"Peter -- "

"Nate, do you think it's possible that you and I are..."

Finish it.
Package it.
Publish it.

This fandom needs more fic.

I just wanted to say that I loved this a whole lot. Perfect coda to the pilot, captures the mood.

Thank you. I hope canon from next week's show doesn't negate it, but that wasn't enough of a concern for me not to write this.

I already loved Adrian Pasdar for no good reason whatsoever.

This show is giving me some good reasons. :-)

Thanks,

Emma

Very nicely done! I like how it's still all about him and not about the brother that almost died, that seems very in character.
Emma DeMarais: BlueEyeemmademarais on September 27th, 2006 09:56 pm (UTC)
Thank you!

I could see him being focused on Peter until they got to the hospital and then - as the title says - the bottom drops out and he has to face what's happened *to him*.

Yes, selfish Nathan comes out once he has time alone, but when he rushes away from the woman he unconsciously is drawn back to Peter. Peter's right. They are connected. It'll be interesting to see how their relationship plays out over the season.

I'm thinking perhaps he'll drop out of the campaign at the last minute citing a need to focus on family so he can avoid an ugly loss and gain some desperately needed good will from the constituency for a later try at office. It'll also give him time to get his head on straight about his new power.

I'm really dying to know what the deal is with Peter. If he can fly too why didn't he? Maybe he's right in that his foot did hover over the floor so his power is merely levitation and not flight. If so, Nathan beats him again. ;-)

Ack! Need. More. Episodes.

Thanks,

Emma

You know, I really like this because it shows that very careful edge that I see in Nathan. He's clearly worried about Peter, clearly cares about him, but at the same time, he's very much concerned about what it all means to him, how he's affected by it.

Great job with capturing both the Petrelli Brother's dynamic as well as Nathan's personality.

Also, the heroes_flashfic rules say it's fine to post your fic in your own lj after the challenge is over, so if you did have something to contribute there, you'd be more than welcome to post it here as well.

If the flashfic comm isn't for you though, have you considered joining heroes50? (not an underscore in sight ;) ) It's a growing comm with more and more members every day.

But thank you for writing this and it's awesome to see more people writing Heroes.

Well put. Loving family and being self-centered are not mutually exclusive. Nathan's just on a different part of the spectrum between those two than Peter is. That's made abundantly clear in the scene with their mother.

Also, the heroes_flashfic rules say it's fine to post your fic in your own lj after the challenge is over, so if you did have something to contribute there, you'd be more than welcome to post it here as well.

I'm aware of the rules - they're the same as at numb3rsflashfic. I just think it's inapropriate and unnecessary to deny authors the ability to post their own fic at their own LJs. Asking for exclusivity from other comms I might understand, but IMHO I can't see a valid reason to prohibit/postpone an author from posting their own fic on their personal account.

If the flashfic comm isn't for you though, have you considered joining heroes50? (not an underscore in sight ;) ) It's a growing comm with more and more members every day.

I already belong to varietypack100 which is multifandom so I can use it for Heroes fic as well, so I don't need 50 prompts for one fandom. Well, I guess I do since I am also doing 1character for more than one Numb3rs character. ;-) For now, I plan on doing the using my Variety Pack prompts. Maybe once I finish all 100 and go looking for a new challenge I'll consider a fandom specific one. For now, 100 fic might take me a while, say a couple of weeks? /snicker/ (Not sure if you've peeked into my archives at all, but I'm scarily prolific. I did 30 fic as a favor for another author and dashed them off in a matter of days.) /grins/

But thank you for writing this and it's awesome to see more people writing Heroes.

Thank you for coming to read it and commenting!

I hope to see a lot more fic in the coming weeks. I know it's only been a couple of days, but I was shocked to see all the *pre-premiere* fic and comms! Who knew?

Hopefully more Heroes fic from my muse soon. I can't wait... :-)

Thanks,

Emma

This is a nice exploration of Nathan's likely reaction to having flown. He did seem quite shocked by the experience, and certainly his love for Peter propels him to try.

I'm wondering why you rated this fic NC17, though. I thought I was coming over to read Petrellicest and got a Nathan character exploration. ;)

NC17, as used by the motion picture industry means that no children under 17 will be admitted without a parent. As adopted (illegally, actually, as the ratings scheme is in fact owned by MPAA who sued Marvel over it several years ago) by fic writers, I've never seen it used when there wasn't actual sexual contact or significant references to such occurring in the past, and in addition that this was more explicit than might be found in an R rated movie.

Myself, I never use NC17 unless it's PWP.

It doesn't change anything about the story itself, but I think readers seeing the rating in a comm or elsewhere expecting porn will be surprised. It's been my experience as an author that readers have very specific expectations and when you don't meet them, they either stop reading you or are highly skeptical about your writing.

I'm sure you have your own reasons and experiences. It's just something my editor has drilled into me, and my company drills into our authors, and it struck me as odd.

You know, I could have *sworn* my statement on this issue was in my disclaimer post. Huh. I'll have to go back and check to see why it's not and fix it.

I do have something in there about minors, but I need to make it clearer.

I got burned before and can not risk having any minors read my fic. I *really* don't want to have to lock it up, so I made my whole LJ adults only *and* I rate each fic NC17 (Default) - even the family friendly G rated ones - just so there's no chance someone could come to read a G or PG and accidentally stray into one with rape or incest porn in it.

I know it's cost me readers and will continue to do so, but I need to be able to live with myself and this means my conscience is clear.

I do, however, making pairings clear in my headers. Nathan/Peter is a pairing and Nathan, Peter is not. I'm *very* diligent about that.

I know about the MPAA and they don't scare me. I fly too far beneath their radar for them to care about someone like me.

That said, if they ask nicely? I'll change. Until then, I get really annoyed by the current crop of alternative ratings, so I stick with what I know.

Thanks for taking the time to comment on this. I'll work on fixing up my disclaimer in case someone actually has this question and reads it.

Glad you liked the fic. Not sure if you've seen, but I have another gen one up now. No Petrecest... At least not yet. ;-)

Thanks,

Emma

Oh, man... I *eat up* hospital scenes. We got some good Peter ones - for which I was grateful - but only one killer Nathan and Peter scene.

They made up for it by the great rooftop scene. (Go see my other gen Heroes fic for that post-ep.) I just hope we keep getting this kind of fodder in each episode.

Thanks for reading and commenting.
