Nathan dismissed his bodyguards at the door to his Manhattan apartment, entered and locked the door behind him with a tired sigh.

Tossing his keys on the console table beside him, he stripped off his tie – the red one had been the right choice after all – and removed his suit jacket as he stepped further into the dimly lit foyer.

The tie and jacket fell to the ground when Peter emerged from the shadows and cold cocked Nathan, knocking him to the floor.

Peter was on him in an instant, straddling him on the floor as he drew his arm back, punching his brother in the face repeatedly.

"You fucking bastard! God damn fucking liar!"

Peter kept pummeling his brother's face with his fist and Nathan laid there, simply taking the blows.

"I told Simone I loved her and you told her I was crazy and suicidal! You fucking told the whole world! You knew I wasn't depressed like Dad and you knew I didn't try to kill myself, but now everyone thinks I'm all fucked up!"

Nathan winced as Peter landed a fresh round of blows strengthened by his renewed ire.

Peter finally pulled his hand back when he realized it was warm and sticky – mottled red from Nathan's bloody nose and split lip.

He deflated all at once, face crumbling into sadness as he all but collapsed over Nathan's still unprotesting form.

"I can't do it anymore," he said haltingly, his voice tinged with despair. "I tried over and over and I can't fly and I can't levitate. It's just gone..."

Nathan heard the hitch in Peter's breath and wrapped his arms around him consolingly.

"It's okay, Pete."

"No, it's not!" Peter said loudly, bolting back up. "I had powers! I was special! We both were! Now it ends up the powers are gone and you fucking betrayed me to the press to save your damn campaign!"

Peter's breath was coming in great heaving gasps now as he fought back his anger and sadness.

"Is that what you think?" Nathan asked. He drew Peter back into his embrace, a little surprised at how easily he allowed it. "I did it for you, buddy. I'm a politician. I work with the government. I know how they operate."

"So?" Peter said, confused.

Nathan looked Peter square in the eye. "Peter, if the government found out that someone had superpowers they'd have them shipped off to a secret lab in a heartbeat and if they thought that person was a threat they might never let them out." He brushed the hair away from Peter's face gently, a gesture he'd done automatically – like his mother – thousands of times in the past. "I couldn't let them do that to you. I couldn't let them take you away. Better for them to think you're a little unstable instead of a danger to national security."

Peter leaned down, resting his heated forehead against Nathan's.

"You could have told me ahead of time."

"No, I really couldn't."

A moment of silence passed where their combined breathing was the only sound; Peter's labored breaths slowing until they unconsciously fell into time with Nathan's.

"You let me hit you. Earlier and now."

"I deserved it." Nathan let out a deep breath. "But I do admit an ice pack would be good about now."

Chastened, Peter scrambled up and off his brother and offered him a hand up, which Nathan accepted.

"I'm sorry I went off like that."

"It's okay. What I did was pretty despicable. I'll probably drop in the polls for doing it, but if it keeps you from winding up some scientist's lab rat or dissected and put under a microscope it was worth it."

"What about you?" Peter asked, concern finding its way back into his voice.

"What about me?"

"Well, you can fly too – or you could before at least – so why aren't you worried they'll drag you off as well?"

Nathan laid his hands on Peter's shoulders.

"Pete, I know we haven't always been the equal partners you wanted us to be, but I'm your big brother. It's my job to protect you. What happens to me isn't important in comparison."

"It's important to me," Peter said quietly.

Nathan nodded and forced a little smile despite the pain.

"For what it's worth, I'm sorry I hurt you. I just did what I thought was best in a bad situation."

Nathan pulled his handkerchief out of his pocket and mopped up the blood from his face.

Peter tugged on his arm. "Come on. Let's go to the kitchen so I can get you fixed up."

"I knew there had to be some benefit to having a nurse in the family," Nathan joshed lightly as Peter led the way through the dark apartment.

"And here you thought my career choice was useless," Peter tossed back, making an effort to sound casual as well.

Nathan leaned against the doorway as Peter walked ahead of him towards the freezer.

"Did you really tell Simone you loved her?" he asked suddenly.

Peter stopped and paused briefly before turning around. He lifted his chin and spoke clearly and simply.

"Yes. I did."

Nathan nodded approvingly. "Good for you." He slid onto one of the kitchen bar stools and fingered his swollen jaw gingerly. "I like this new Peter – confident, self-assured... Of course, I'd like him better if he didn't punch me out every time he saw me..."

"Shush..." Peter admonished softly, pulling up a stool in front of Nathan and holding an ice pack carefully wrapped inside a towel against his brother's battered face. "Just let me take care of you."

"I thought that was my job," Nathan countered, leaning into the cool relief in Peter's hand.

"It's what brothers do for each other," Peter explained. "So don't try to fight it."

Nathan closed his eyes and let the pain begin to slip away.

"Never."

Thank you!

Nathan's my favorite, but mostly because I loved Adrian's roles in the past.

I'm warming up to Milo/Peter fast though!
