Numb3rs Fic: Missing Third
Written for numb3rs100 Challenge #78 – Sister

Title: Missing Third (Sequel to dsudis's Second)
Pairing/Characters: Charlie, Don
Rating: PG
Word Count: 200
Spoilers: None
Summary: Don finally tells Charlie a long held family secret
Notes/Warnings: Read the disclaimer on my LJ

"I had a sister?"

Charlie's hands lay unnaturally still in his lap. Don laid his hands over them gently.

"We had a sister."

Charlie's eyes met Don's, welling with unexpected tears.

"How old would she be now?" he asked, his voice barely more than a pained whisper.

"Thirty-three this month. They were going to call her..."

"No!" Charlie rose abruptly and fled to the window, staring out with his back to Don but seeing nothing. "I don't want to know her name," he said, the strain of anguish evident in the taut line of his body. 'If I know it..." His voice broke as he tried to get the words out. "I'll never be able to forget it."

Don took a few anxious steps towards Charlie then stopped, feeling helpless, knowing he wanted both to be alone and to not be alone.

Charlie finally spoke, his back still to Don as if looking at him would undo him, shatter his fragile veneer.

"Tell me her name," he whispered.

"Are you sure?" Don asked softly.

Charlie took a deep breath and turned. Don saw a determination in his face that startled him, reminded him of someone: their mother.

"Tell me."

I confess that this story was not my idea. All credit goes to the wonderful Dira (dsudis), whose work I have admired pretty much since I first joined LJ nearly a year ago.

She surprised me by showing up out of nowhere and submitting a triple drabble called Second at numb3rs100 (which most of you know by now I co-mod). It was sad and compelling and tear jerking and I loved it.

Evidently so did the muse.

So suddenly, out of nowhere, I get my own submission for this week's Sister prompt at N100.

In my head I have Charlie saying "I had a sister?" and Don emphasizing "We had a sister."

I know I shouldn't have glommed on to someone else's fic, but I couldn't help myself. In a matter of minutes it was all written, edited and polished and there was no going back.

Please go read Dira's Second and the rest of her fic and give her much love. She's one of the best authors in the fandom and deserves the praise and attention she garners.

This fic goes out to anyone who has ever lost a sibling. I feel for you all and understand your pain.

Very special thanks to Dira for this and all past and future inspiration.

LOL! The world does revolve around you - *your* world!

Glad you liked it. I was concerned about how it might be received.

That's how I felt about Dira's and the reason why it got under my skin so badly I had to write the next part myself.
